Last year’s “comeback” single for Mariah Carey, “Triumphant,” sounded fantastic but never really caught on with the public-at-large. So, this time around, the new mom and target of Nicki Minaj shady subtweets decided to partner up with R&B sensation Miguel, who just scored the Grammy for Best R&B single, on a track called “Beautiful.” It’s not your typical Mariah fare, but that doesn’t mean that we don’t love it.
Cinco de Mayo (not to be confused with Mexico’s Independence Day) celebrates an unlikely military victory Mexico had over the French back in the day. It’s not as big of deal there, but in the U.S. it’s all about guacamole, booze and parties (I’ll be shooting tequila starting at sundown). As if the song itself wasn’t already glorious on its own, Miguel’s new black and white video for “Candles In The Sun” pulls at your heart-strings even more. Shifting a bit from the sensual topics he’s been known for, the recent Grammy winner uses imagery from superstorm Sandy’s aftermath to put forth an agenda of awareness in the clip, making us recall some of our favorite meaningful, cause-driven videos over the years. Only thing we can think of worse than watching Miguel have pretend sex on stage is being forced to actually watch him do the nasty. If an artist wins the Grammy for Song of the Year, they’ve immediately been granted permission to stunt on everybody for at least a year with “Hi, I’m Grammy winner [insert name], and my song was, well, better than any other song that year.” It’d be pretty obnoxious but the Recording Academy acknowledging your song as the best one for the year is clutch. The Governors Ball Music Festival in New York City has absolutely nothing to do with the governor just in case you were wondering. And while the three day event of diverse acts is five months away, an official lineup announcement video dropped naming two of the three headliners. Kanye West and Kings of Leon are headlining the festival along with a mystery act that hasn’t been disclosed yet. A month before Kanye’s second-coming baby is born he’ll hit the stage at Randall’s Island. Read more…
Last week, we successfully brought you the VH1 staff’s favorite songs of 2011 without any bloodshed, and we’re happy to report that no one’s brain exploded while trying to narrow down the amazing albums of 2012 into a concise list. Again, what VH1 staffers enjoyed in 2012 was a rich and vibrant tapestry of genres, created both by newcomers and veterans.
As far as consensus is concerned, there were 23 LPs that appeared on multiple ballots, but only 6 that appeared on four or more lists: Miguel‘s Kaleidoscope Dream (7 ballots), Emeli Sandé‘s Our Version Of Events and Frank Ocean‘s channel ORANGE (6 ballots apiece), Kendrick Lamar‘s good kid, m.A.A.d. city (5 ballots), Taylor Swift‘s RED and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis‘ The Heist (each with 4 ballots).
When we began compiling our Best Songs of 2012 list, there were many differing opinions, and after briefly toying with the idea of pitting all our staff against one another in a Hunger Games fight-to-the-death scenario against the backdrop of Times Square, we conceded that the most diplomatic and least murderous thing to do would be to each submit our own list. You know, in the name of preserving a civil work environment and whatnot (not to mention our longstanding policy of avoiding contact with the human resources department). So while we didn’t battle it out in a conference room or some such nonsense, each one of us faced an internal battle — choosing our favorite songs of the year.
As far as consensus is concerned, there were 21 songs that appeared on multiple ballots, but only eight that appeared on three or more lists: Carly Rae Jepsen‘s “Call Me Maybe” (4 ballots), Frank Ocean‘s “Pyramids” (4 ballots), fun.‘s “We Are Young” (4 ballots), Gotye‘s “Somebody I Used To Know” (3 ballots), P!nk‘s “Just Give Me A Reason” (3 ballots), Usher‘s “Climax” (3 ballots), Azealia Banks‘ “212″ (3 ballots), and Miguel‘s “Adorn” (3 ballots).

2012 has been an interesting year for the music business. As chart genres shift and technology continues to influence how and what we consume, in-flux trends seem to fly in out of nowhere.The viral sensation breakout star, for example. But can we go back to basics for just a moment? These people are here to entertain us and sing, right? Like, into microphones and send sound waves into the universe. Having created what’s sure to be a sing-along bar anthem for years to come, Gotye’s “Somebody I Used to Know” is a monster. Shout out to Kimbra for the solid assist, too!
