Kick Out The Jams: 20 Classic Live Albums In Hard Rock And Heavy Metal History!

View Photo Gallery

The live album. Though its popularity has severely waned as of late (along with albums in general!), it was a staple of hard rock and heavy metal bands back in the 70s and early 80s. In fact, a band’s live record would sometimes outsell its studio counterparts and in some ways come to define the band, displaying their raw, reckless energy and showing just what they’re capable of in the flesh. At times it became a band’s breakthrough album; at other times (if you’re Led Zeppelin) it capitalized on the band’s popularity. But either way, these LP’s go down in the annals of music history as some of the greatest rock albums of all time. From Kiss to Thin Lizzy, Judas Priest to Black Sabbath, all your favorite bands released live albums, and we love them for it. So to celebrate this week’s That Metal Show guest, former Kiss drummer Peter Criss, who played on their breakthrough Alive! double LP set, here’s a list of 20 Classic Live Albums In Hard Rock & Heavy Metal History. And whether they’re 100% live, live with overdubs, or mostly studio-enhanced, we don’t really care. What’s important is that they all kick some serious ass and kick out some serious jams.

20 Metal Bands That Are So Awesome They Named Songs After Themselves

SelfieText

The name remains the same. Or at least it does for the following bands. Ever since heavy metal pioneers Black Sabbath kicked off the album Black Sabbath with the song “Black Sabbath” many have taken a cue from the masters and saved their most killer riffs for songs that embody the band themselves in both spirit and literally, in name. From Motorhead, whose first single was the classic “Motorhead,” through thrashers like Anthrax and Exodus and all the way up to modern day ragers Children Of Bodom and Dimmu Borgir, the theme or signature song is an essential part of heavy metal’s tribal culture. Hell, it’s such a cool thing to do even hardcore punk bands like Minor Threat and Bad Religion got into the act, but hey, that’s a different list. Anyhow, scroll through the pages, stream the videos and check out 20 kick ass metal jams that are named after their creators very own kick ass metal bands.  Read more…

What Are The Top 5 Motorhead Songs?

MOTOR_HEAD_1
Motorheadbangers worldwide let out a collective groan last week as news spread that the band had to cancel their upcoming European tour due to Motorhead-honcho Lemmy’s continuing health problems. One of rock’s most unrepentant badasses, Lemmy lived on a diet of Marlboros, Jack Daniels and Lord knows what else for over 50 years and apparently it’s FINALLY catching up to him at 68 years of age. He was diagnosed with Diabetes in 2000 and was hospitalized last year due to a hematoma but if anyone can knock a disease on its ass it’s the man in black. This week on VH1 Classic‘s That Metal Show, Don, Jim and Ed paid tribute to one of hard rock and heavy metal’s greatest bands on the TMS Top 5 and counted down the Top 5 Motorhead Songs Of All Time. See the final list and check out the boys personal picks on the following pages and vote for your favorite songs in our poll. Read more…

The 10 Biggest Badasses In Heavy Metal + Hard Rock!

View Photo Gallery

The classic adage about rock star excess is “sex, drugs and rock n’ roll.” Let’s be honest though, that just scratches the surface of the lifestyle. There’s so much more between the lines. And although all rock stars partake in “the life” to some degree, some take it to a whole ‘nother level. These folks are legends and rock icons. The people who are about as famous for their behavior as their music. Rock n’ roll is in their blood (along with all sorts of other chemicals and toxins). It’s not forced; it’s just who they are. They DO take everything to the extreme. They DO get arrested and start fights for completely ridiculous reasons. They DO have residencies at rehab facilities. They DO have wild stories that seem to be myths. And maybe they are, but who cares? From Lemmy to Ozzy to Danzig, here’s a list of heavy metal and hard rock’s 10 biggest badasses of all time. The girls want them and the guys want to be them. Oh, some girls want to be them too (exhibit A: Wendy O. Williams).

Heavy Metal’s 11 Most Un-Metal Songs Of All Time

UnMetalMain

“Soft” would generally be the last word you’d use to describe a heavy metal band. Yet without fail, these titans of anger and aggression occasionally dip into their bag of yacht rock and present us with some very “un-metal” metal songs. Is that a piano note I hear? An acoustic guitar? A glockenspiel? Nah, couldn’t be. Oh but it is. In all fairness, these songs are sometimes written to parody and mock other genres of music. And though our initial response might be one of shock, disappointment or even disgust – we tend to come around and eventually can’t imagine our lives without these soft rocking gems. From Black Sabbath to Accept to Metallica, they’ve all gone there. But we love them just the same.  Here’s a list of the most un-metal songs in heavy metal and hard rock history and in honor of today being National Metal Day, November 11th, we’re giving you 11 instead of the usual 10 (Please note: hair metal glam bands have been excluded as otherwise this would be a very loooong list).
