Canadian grunge rockers Nickelback are an easy target, maybe because of all the records they’ve sold or because Chad Kroeger is engaged to be married to Avril Lavigne; because they cast George Costanza in their last video, or maybe because they’ve been the butt of every rock joke for more than a decade now and we’re all just used to it by now? Whatever the reason, College Humor has turned their “Photograph” into a too-good parody song called “Look at this Instagram.”
The video takes digs at frequent Instagram subjects, like nail art, cats, garden gnomes and “coincidental boob,” and maybe is making fun of Kroeger’s warbly rasp of a voice, too. But that’s okay, it’s pretty on point and if the guys wanted to work this song into their sets we definitely wouldn’t mind. Alternatively, if Chavril felt so compelled to Instagram their breakfasts, we would probably “Like” that, too!
Everyone knows that the years 2000-2010 were not very good for the music industry. Thanks to a perfect storm of rapid technological shifts, widespread piracy, consumer apathy, and executive ineptitude, the industry suffered through a slump that nearly killed off the entire business model. That is, until Adele came along!
We’re being slightly facetious, but Adele is credited by many as having (temporarily) saved the music business. Her landmark album, 21, just sold its 8 millionth copy here in the United States, making it the 4th most successful album to be released on these shores in the last 10 years. The latest rock beef came this week in the form of The Black Keys‘ Patrick Carney spouting completely unprovoked vitriol at Nickelback, including, “Rock & roll is dying because people became OK with Nickelback being the biggest band in the world,” in a rather malicious rant in a Rolling Stone interview. The attack seemed petty at the time, and now seems pettier still given Nickelback’s response.
The band Tweeted yesterday, “Thanks to the drummer in the Black Keys calling us the Biggest Band in the World in Rolling Stone. Hehe,” and it seems like not only are Nickelback taking the insult on the chin, they’re taking a novel approach to beefing — not taking it so seriously. No matter what your opinion of Nickelback, it’s clear the guys have a sense of humor, and we’re giving them a standing ovation for their jokey spin on the comments, and for not engaging in a back and forth slanging match.

This holiday season it’s snowing Bublé, as Michael Bublé‘s album Christmas scrapes into the number 1 spot this week on the Billboard 200 chart. Ousting Nickelback‘s Here And Now by a freckle, Bublé’s Christmas reached the top spot by selling 227,000 copies, a mere 0.18% more than Nickelback (which is the closest race since 2007). While we’re huge supporters of both artists, as November ends and the festive season is well and truly upon us, we can’t stop humming Bublé’s “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town,” so we think it’s pertinent that the Christmas themed album should inch ahead. “Christmas” is Bublé’s third number 1 album and marks his best sales week ever — Merry Christmas to you, Sir Bublé!
Meanwhile, Rihanna’s Talk That Talk shifted 197,000 units, good for third place. This debut is a smidge off her first week sales of Loud last year, which sold 207,000 units, but with “We Found Love” firmly entrenched at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and “You Da One” steamrolling its way towards the Top 10—it’s sitting at #14 this week—RiRi’s camp is sitting pretty for an extended chart run.
