Strange Bedfellows: How Did These Unlikely Musical Pairings Fare?

View Photo Gallery

One of the most difficult things about being a successful musician is finding the inspiration to be creative. Some people accomplish this by relentlessly poking the still burning embers of charred relationships (*cough* Taylor Swift *cough*), others turn to illegal drugs to change their worldview, but the following artists were able to find their muses not with their bandmates, but rather by pairing off with other musicians that appear on the surface to be incongrous with their vibe. So, in salute of the deeply strange pairing of Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong and ivory tickler Norah Jones on the new album of Everly Brothers covers called Foreverly, here’s a rundown of unlikely musical collaborations from over the years and their results.

Tuned In: Norah Jones Says “Goodbye” On Leno

Jay Leno was in good company last night on his Tonight Show, with First Lady Michelle Obama and Olympic gold medal gymnast Gabby Douglas on as guests, and then the always lovely Norah Jones to play “Say Goodbye” as FLOTUS flitted away. The stage was warm lit like a swanky retro lounge, and the slinky Little Broken Hearts cut went down like a night cap. “It’s all right, it’s okay, I don’t need you anyways,” she sasses over the woozy guitar line. We like this new Norah.

Tuned In: Norah Jones Haunts Conan With “Miriam”

Things don’t end so well for Miriam, we know that now. So it’s with a certain anticipation that we watch when Norah Jones performs the lurking Little Broken Heart lullaby, and all the more so when she plays it live, like she did last night on Conan. Seated at her piano in a pretty blue dress, Jones kept her eyes trained to the audience while she pleaded, “Miriam, was it a game to you? Was it a game to him? Don’t tell me lies.” This is a perfect song for late night, when all is dark and quiet and it lulls you to sleep and then haunt your dreams with it’s eery beauty. Oh, Miriam, that’s such a pretty name…

And below, watch her web-only performance of “Out On the Road”

Norah Jones Takes Quiet Revenge In New Video For “Miriam”

“Miriam,” off of Norah Jones‘ recent Little Broken Heart, is as leaden a lullaby as a lullaby can be. In the new Phil Andelman-directed video, Norah sits alone in row boat, floating quietly on a twilight lit Texas pond and singing about just how nice a name Miriam could be. But, pretty as could be in her red dress, she is a woman scorned, and nothing else is so peaceful as it seems. “Never been the killing kind, but I know what you did,” she warns. “Now I’ve saved the best for you.” And well, what was started in the “Happy Pills” video gets finished and we are reminded that no water should sit so still.

Storytellers: Norah Jones Sneak Peek: Does “Don’t Know Why” Have A Dirty Double Meaning?

Don’t expect Norah Jones to give away the entire story behind the conception of her songs on this Friday’s VH1 Storytellers: Norah Jones. Don’t fret, folks. In the way she shared how “Happy Pills” came to fruition, she will give interesting details on select songs, but what she doesn’t want to do is tell so much that it becomes boring. “It kind of takes the magic out of the song,” she told us. Vh1 Storytellers Sneak Peek: Norah Jones Purposely Made “Happy Pills” A Mean Song

We’re beyond ecstatic for the premiere of VH1 Storytellers: Norah Jones this Friday. The video to “Happy Pills” may have been about revenge and murder, but in this sneak peek she says the inspiration for the song originated from a far less dramatic place. As far as we know there was no real revenge plot she concocted to get back at a cheating husband as the video shows. It all started from her hunger. No, really. Read more…

It’s A Different World In Grace Potter & The Nocturnals’ “Never Go Back”

It’s all vintage everything in Grace Potter & The Nocturnals “Never Go Back” video. Grace Potter’s heavenly voice pierces as she travels back to her childhood, which for this video’s purposes seems pre-civilization. Facing those demons she sings about the quiet girl is taunted by tiny warriors in face paint. They jump on top of the table and eat with their hands. As if that wasn’t barbaric enough they break plates, throw a violin over the stairwell and jump on the bed. We totally understand how unappealing going back is, and why she sings, “I’ll never go back there no more.” We don’t blame you, girl. Read more…

Norah Jones Is Haunted From Beyond The Grave (And Rightfully So!) In Her New “Happy Pills” Video

Norah Jones describes her video for “Happy Pills”, the first single off her forthcoming …Little Broken Pieces LP, as “a murder-not-so-much-of-a-mystery.” By our count, it’s the second music video to premiere in the last month that deals with females exacting revenge on men who did them dirty. However, unlike Brandy and Monica‘s “It All Belongs To Me” video (where the only victims are a man’s pride and a rather expensive Porsche), Norah takes it a step further and straight up MURDERS her cheatin’ hubby. Guess she really meant the “Until death do us ‘part” portion of her vows, eh?

Let’s talk about this chain of events for a moment! If we understand the video correctly, Norah suspects that her husband is making time behind her back with a ginger seductress, so she hires a private detective to investigate the matter. Said P.I. —who, quite frankly, is no Magnum— brings Norah back a picture of a redhead who accompanied Mr. Jones (let’s just call him that) on a picnic. Not a picture of them kissing (or even a pirated RedTube video of them doing the nasty!), mind you, just a picture of the girl’s face! Norah, it’s fair to say, WILDLY overreacts: She chloroforms Mr. Jones after a front-seat makeout sesh, then pushes his car and his unconscious body into a lake, where he presumably drowns. THEN she lies to the cops, calls her ginger rival on the phone to rub it in, and then invites her male accomplice over for dinner and some Michelle Pfieffer in The Fabulous Baker Boys action on top of her piano. Call us crazy if you must, but we’re pretty glad that the Ghost of Mr. Jones is haunting his ex for all eternity! Let’s hope he doesn’t heed her pleas of “Please just let me go now.”
