Just in time for the holidays, One Direction has a new album in stores. We normally don’t give too much thought to the artistic aspirations of boy bands, but seeing as how One Direction is almost certainly the most popular band in the world these days, we decided to take a close listen to Midnight Memories. And you know what? We were pleasantly surprised by the new direction (pun intended) that they boys decided to take musically, referencing acts like David Bowie, Mumford And Sons and Don Henley along the way.

In the new documentary, This Is Us, One Direction takes us behind the scenes on their recent world tour and opens up about who they are as a band. However, This Is Us isn’t the first time the boys have had the cameras following them.

Most everyone knows that One Direction started out on the UK version of X Factor, but unless they watched that reality show as obsessively as we (and most Directioners) do, they might not have picked up on some really weird and fascinating parts of the boy band’s origin story.

Did you know that a sea urchin almost destroyed the group? Or that One Direction was this close to having a Welsh member? Or that One Direction might never had existed if not for the benevolence of Katy Perry?

The Guys Of One Direction Call Miley Cyrus A “Guilty Pleasure”

The public simply “can’t stop” talking about twerk goddess Miley Cyrus and her eye-opening performance at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, and this includes One Direction. VH1 caught up with 1D members Niall Horan, Liam Payne, and Louis Tomlinson at the premiere of their upcoming documentary, This Is Us, (out Friday, August 30) and the trio offered up an interesting take on what exactly should be considered a guilty pleasure: “Miley Cyrus,” Liam said with a smile. “That’s topical!” Louis added.
