It’s A Different World In Grace Potter & The Nocturnals’ “Never Go Back”

It’s all vintage everything in Grace Potter & The Nocturnals “Never Go Back” video. Grace Potter’s heavenly voice pierces as she travels back to her childhood, which for this video’s purposes seems pre-civilization. Facing those demons she sings about the quiet girl is taunted by tiny warriors in face paint. They jump on top of the table and eat with their hands. As if that wasn’t barbaric enough they break plates, throw a violin over the stairwell and jump on the bed. We totally understand how unappealing going back is, and why she sings, “I’ll never go back there no more.” We don’t blame you, girl. Read more…

Listen To Grace Potter And The Nocturnals’ Funky “Never Go Back” Co-Written By The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach

Move over FlorenceGrace Potter has one upped you, and it looks like there’s a new husky voiced diva with soul penetrating vocals in town. Grace Potter and the Nocturnals have premiered their new track “Never Go Back” exclusively with Rolling Stone, and it’s quite inspiring — more than a hit, it’s a great, honest pop song with undertones of retro soul and rock riffs. The track was co-written by The Black Keys‘ Dan Auerbach, who also co-wrote two other songs and produced one song on Potter’s forthcoming album The Lion the Beast the Beat, due to be released on June 12th.

The track is bluesy but at the same time has a spectacularly stadium ready sound, which could possibly be attributed to the Auerbach influence, given The Keys’ recent progression into the sound of epic. Of working with Auerbach, Potter says, “Dan’s studio is a sex shop for gear pervs… I found a tiny old Casio that reminded me of my first-ever keyboard and started playing. He jumped on and started f**king around with the rhythm track, and we wrote ‘Never Go Back’ within the first hour of being in his place… We weren’t thinking, ‘Let’s write a big hit single.’ It was more like, ‘Let’s geek out with some weird gear and see what happens.’ I’m very glad we did.” And so are we! The track is catchy while at the same time retaining a musical honesty that is rare in grand pop anthems.

Coachella 2012 Line Up Analysis: Who’s In, Who’s Out And What’s What

We’ve been plagued with all sort of thoughts since the official 2012 Coachella lineup was unveiled last night. Mostly, we’ve just been wetting our pants with excitement (which isn’t doing much for our social lives), but between all the puppy dog-like urination we’ve been able to take some time to reflect on the line up — what we like and what we’re not so fond of, and how it all fits together with the 2011-12 music landscape.

Coachella 2012: Now Starring Every Buzz Band From 2011…
If it buzzed in 2011, you’ll find it on a stage at Coachella 2012: Girls, Yuck, EMA, Kendrick Lamar, SBTRKT, Azealia Banka, A$AP Rocky, tUnE-YarDs, Childish Gambino, The Weeknd, Wild Flag, Real Estate, Gotye, Wild Beasts, Gardens & Villas etc. Oh and FRANK OCEAN FRANK OCEAN FRANK OCEAN FRANK OCEAN FRANK OCEAN FRANK OCEAN FRANK OCEAN FRANK OCEAN FRANK OCEAN FRANK OCEAN FRANK OCEAN FRANK OCEAN FRANK OCEAN FRANK OCEAN FRANK OCEAN FRANK OCEAN.

… But Where’s Lana Del Rey?
Noticeably missing from the lineup is THE buzz artist of 2011, Lana Del Rey. We’re assuming this would have been a conscious choice on the part of either Coachella organizers or Lana’s team, but given that her debut album, Born To Die, is about to drop it doesn’t seem likely that Lana Del Rey would pass up the opportunity to promote it at Coachella, which leaves us wondering why her name isn’t on that poster.

Our You Oughta Know Friends
We called these ones in 2011, and now some of our favorite You Oughta Know artists are set to tear up Coachella which only makes us swell with pride. Our You Oughta Know friends in the lineup include Dawes, Ximena Sarinana, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, and Fitz and the Tantrums.

Taylor Swift Wins Entertainer Of The Year At The 2011 Country Music Awards, But Grace Potter And Kenny Chesney Steal The Show

The 2011 Country Music Awards aired on ABC last night, and Nashville’s finest dusted off their boots and gussied themselves up for the national TV spotlight. For the second year in a row, Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley (whose new record, This Is Country Music, is pretty great) proved themselves to be a surprisingly deft and wholly likeable hosting combo, particularly when they’re roasting Kim Kardashian over the spit in song form. There was no “big winner” of the night, per se, but The Band Perry took home a couple of awards (Best New Artist, Best Song for Song Of The Summer contender “If I Die Young”) and Taylor Swift took home the evening’s biggest prize, Entertainer of the Year.

However, the evening’s best moment didn’t involve pandering to Hollywood (Blake Shelton’s raucous version of “Footloose”) or even a huge, pyro-laden production number (sorry, Miranda Lambert!). It occured when Kenny Chesney and VH1 fave Grace Potter each slung an acoustic guitar over their shoulders, hopped on a stool and duetted on a positively gorgeous version of their hit, “You And Tequila.” Of course, we’re suckers for any and all things Grace (those stems!), but the way these two harmonized last night reminded us why we listen to country music in the first place. There’s no slick production, no glossy radio sound, just two great voices (and some palpable chemistry) blending together to make something special. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did.
