Like a one-night stand, people love their one-hit wonders, and heavy metal and hard rock are no exception to the rule. A good one hit wonder takes you back to that time and place that you first heard it. When you sang it out loud, drunk at the bar, and didn’t care what anyone else thought about it. They carry none of the baggage of a more serious artist, whose music must be savored and mulled over like an overpriced bottle of wine. Like those in other genres, in most cases they are just dumb fun though several important bands have also snuck their way into the charts as well. Read more…
Few things are as essential to the sound of classic heavy metal as the high-pitched banshee howl of its vocalists. Starting with Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant, heavy metal bands engaged in a vocal arms raise as successive waves of singers went ever upward into the highest reaches of their range. Forget smashing guitars, some of the metal’s highest screamers could shatter glass with their histrionic shrieking. Read more…
The latest episode of That Metal Show featured Scott Rockenfield and Todd La Torre from Queensryche, and Dave Mustaine. Carmine Appice hit the crowd with his drum skills, while the hosts debated the top 5 Rush albums.

Over the past 10 days we’ve asked YOU, the FANS to help us sort our list of essential hard rock and heavy metal tunes and the response has been incredible! Since this is the final list, we’ll be keeping it active for a few days to make sure we have enough time to record all your votes. We had to recruit Evan Seinfeld (Attika7) for one of the toughest TMS Top 5 lists we’ve have ever done on the show: Best Screams on a song. There are so many shrieks and shrills out there in the music world, including the ones we can never forget, like the haunting scream in “Child In Time” by Deep Purple and “Angel of Death” by Slayer (Side note: This one still scares Jim Florentine to this day.) We could easily debate Top 5 Rob Halford Screams, not to mention those of Sebastian Bach, but then we remembered it’s called the TMS Top 5, not Top 100 – So, here’s our top 5:
Last week on That Metal Show, we were joined by comedian/guitarist Zakk Wylde (Black Label Society) and former front man of Queensryche Geoff Tate, who talked about the betrayal that came with the implosion of the band. Also on our mini stage, we had guest shredder George Lynch joining in on the action.
This week’s TMS Top 5 is different from the rest. Instead of choosing a list based on just the music, we decided to combine music and looks to come up with the Top 5 Worst Album Covers, but the albums have to be great. (We are superficial, we know.) Here’s what we came up with.
TMS Top 5 Worst Album Covers on Great Albums
1. Riot – Fire Down Under
Eddie, Don, and Jim all agree it’s an amazing record, but Riot has had a series of horrendous album covers so we can’t really say we’re surpised by it being #1. Jim also said it makes him want to club a baby seal. (Don’t worry PETA, no seals were harmed during the filming of That Metal Show).
