Coachella 2013: Blur, Phoenix, Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Stone Roses To Headline This Year’s Festival

After lots of speculation and one cruise, the lineup for this year’s Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival has been announced. Blur, the Stone Roses, Phoenix and Red Hot Chili Peppers are set to headline the three-day fest that spans two weekends (April 12-14 and April 19-21) for the second consecutive year, which is very exciting but also a little underwhelming. Don’t get us wrong, the top of the lineup is an interesting combination of legendary acts and artists with upcoming release we can’t wait to hear, but after l2012′s even greater mix of genres closing out each sweltering day, we can’t help but feel this year’s fest is dominated by the WGWGs.

That’s not to say that the second and third (and fourth and fifth) tier acts aren’t fabulous: Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Vampire Weekend, and, oh yeah, Wu-Tang Clan, plus the return of the Postal Service (!) and VH1 favorites like Tegan and Sara, Jessie Ware and our January You Oughta Know artist, Allen Stone. ACL 2012 Final Day: Rock Is Never Going Out Of Style As Long As Red Hot Chili Peppers And Iggy & The Stooges Are Around

At ACL Red Hot Chili Peppers and Iggy & The Stooges Prove Rock Will Never Die

Ultimately how a music festival closes on the last day for its 70,000 connoisseurs of music is how its success will be judged. Friday is perhaps a bit blurry, the rain possibly overshadowed Saturday’s performances, and then there’s Sunday—the final day of Austin City Limits, potentially the most memorable for fans. Ending the three day music extravaganza with the Red Hot Chili Peppers is how one properly concludes a festival.

Trekking across the park to Gary Clark Jr.’s show was much easier without the muddy grass Saturday’s rain created. After he blew us away with an incredible performance it’s easy to understand why he’s a rising star in the making. For “When My Train Pulls In” he worked the guitar like he was playing for his life. It didn’t matter that he didn’t start singing until nearly four minutes as long as he didn’t stop stringing that guitar. He’s so skilled he barely looked at the instrument during “Ain’t Messin ‘Round,” which impressed pretty much everyone. His sound was a mix between rock, country and blues with a dose of GCJ flavor. With the help of his awesome band, “Don’t Owe You A Thang” inspired the crowd to clap along to the rhythm, shouting whenever they saw fit. Read more…

VH1 Top 20 Video Countdown‘s Jim Shearer Talks To Just About Everyone At Lollapalooza 2012

Anyone who is anyone who was at Lollapalooza this past weekend talked to VH1 Top 20 Video Countdown‘s Jim Shearer. Or maybe Jim Shearer just made sure to talk to anyone who is anyone who was at Lollapalooza this past weekend, so as to provide you with as thorough a recap of what went down as ever was. Really, the above five minutes tell the whole story: he got Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel to laugh, Gaslight Anthem to punch him, fun. to talk about their summer jams, Aaron Paul to spoil Breaking Bad season 5 part 2 (just kidding!), Chairlift mourning their rained-out set, and he even gained access to headliners the Red Hot Chili Peppers — well, the sign on their trailer. Very fun, and not a moment un-capped. Check it out!

Lollapalooza Day Two Recap: Chicago Showers Bring Mud Madness

What started off as a suffocatingly hot and humid Day Two at Lollapalooza turned into a mud bath by dinnertime. The Lollapalooza Evacuation 2012 commenced around 3PM when severe thunderstorms threatened the safety of the shelterless attendees. While initial reactions to the enforced mass exodus were confusion, anger and sulking, it was very obvious how everyone soothed their frustration. Booze. Lots of booze. Let’s recap the wet ‘n’ wild Saturday, kicking off with the single show I saw before the storm. And I’m so glad I did.

The Givers are the kind of band that makes a crowd happily throw their hands in the air, hop around and sing any lyric they know. Fans got particularly riled up during a lively rendition of “Up Up Up” and it didn’t go unnoticed by band members Tiffany Lamson and Taylor Guarisco. The Louisiana-based group repeatedly stressed how grateful they were to be performing at Lollapalooza. They gave (see what I did there) a spirited performance that surely pleased fans and won over some new ones.

Chairlift was next on the docket for the same stage but unfortunately ended up being one of the shows canceled. Cue three hour rain delay and the soaking of my moccasins.

Well, after more drama than we care to recall, this weekend’s Rock And Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony went off without a hitch (relatively speaking, of course). Sure, there were a few prominent no-shows —W. Axl Rose, Rod Stewart, Adam “MCA” Yauch, Izzy Stradlin— but those who were there very clearly had a blast.

This year, Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Beastie Boys, Donovan, Laura Nyro, the Faces, and, of course, Guns N’ F*cking Roses were inducted into the Hall. This year’s private ceremony was held in Cleveland, and clips of the performances that happened on Saturday night that are popping up on YouTube are getting pulled down without haste, presumably to get everyone to tune-in when HBO airs the ceremony in a few weeks.

That said, our favorite moment of the evening is easily to call out: Guns N’ Roses drummer, former Celebrity Rehab patient and longtime friend of That Metal Show Steven Adler wore a TMS t-shirt to the ceremony! And Your 2012 Lollapalooza Headliners Are… Red Hot Chili Peppers, Black Sabbath, The Black Keys, Jack White, Avicii, And Justice

With this year’s highly anticipated Coachella Festival just three days away, rival festival Lollapalooza just stole a bit of their thunder tonight by announcing the lineup for their 2012 festival, which will be held in Chicago’s Grant Park from August 3-5. This year’s festival will be headlined by a powerful array of rock royalty (Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Black Keys, Jack White), a historic reunion (the only scheduled North American tour date for Black Sabbath) and, for the first time ever, big-draw DJ acts (Avicii, Justice).

VH1 was able to exclusively ask Lollapalooza founder Perry Farrell (Jane’s Addiction) what kind of traits he looks for in his headlining acts, and he answered in typically awesome Farrell fashion:

Bonnaroo’s Awesome Lineup Is Revealed, Starring The Likes Of Radiohead, Bon Iver, Red Hot Chili Peppers And Foster The People

If you’ve been in front of a computer with a working Internet connection today you’re probably aware that Bonnaroo has announced the line up for this year’s festival, and that everyone is getting a little breathy and excited about it. And why not — the lineup is absolutely out of this world, with huge names Radiohead, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Phish, The Beach Boys, Grammy winners Bon Iver, The Avett Brothers and The Shins headlining the festival. While we’re a bit perplexed as to why the legendary Beach Boys are billed fourth (we can understand Radiohead as a firm first, but surely The Beach Boys have more clout on a lineup than Red Hot Chili Peppers or Phish, especially as they’ve reunited to tour this year?), it’s hard to maintain any kind of indignation with such a fun lineup.

The big names appear next to some pretty “of the moment” new comers, including our You Oughta Know artists Foster The People (could this be Grammys round 2, performing with The Beach Boys again perchance?), The Civil Wars, Dawes and Fitz & The Tantrums (we LOVE to say we told ya so!). There’s also the dub act that’s taken the USA by storm, Grammy winner Skrillex, oldies but goodies like The Roots, Alice Cooper, Ludacris and Ben Folds Five. And is anyone as excited about the Black Star comeback as we are?? Hype acts on the list include Childish Gambino, 2011′s lauded tUnE-yArDs, St. Vincent, SBTRKT, Kendrick Lamar, Kurt Vile, EMA and Das Racist to name but a few! Bonnaroo might just have the leg up on the other festivals — sure Coachella has a hype-led lineup with a smattering of superstar at the top of the bill and SXSW is ready to introduce us to the hottest new talent, but Bonnaroo seems to balance the classic and timeless with still relevant veterans and hyped new names across genres. Basically, Bonnaroo’s got something for everyone.

Bonnaroo tickets go on sale February 18th at 12 p.m. EST.
