Class Of 1984: 30 Classic Heavy Metal Albums That Are Turning 30 This Year!

View Photo Gallery

It may seem like a distant memory now, but at the time 1984 was a very foreboding year. Whether in the dystopian George Orwell novel of the same name or the punk rock exploitation thriller Class of 1984, it had ominous connotations and the reality of it wasn’t much better. The threat of nuclear war between The United State and The Soviet Union hovered in the air, especially that summer when U.S. President Ronald Reagan glibly joked “My fellow Americans, I’m pleased to tell you today that I’ve signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes.” Reagan was the perfect And the soundtrack to such a bleak year, from Zurich, Switzerland to California’s San Fernando Valley, was heavy f**king metal. Read more…

Stream New Scorpions Unplugged Album + Watch It On VH1 Classic This Friday!

615-scorpions
Legendary German heavy metal superstars Scorpions have been rocking like a hurricane since the early 1970s. They helped set the tone and timbre of what we commonly think of as the sound of metal on such classic albums as 1975′s In Trance and it’s follow up, 1976′s Virgin Killers. Their commercial breakthrough came during the Golden Age of early ’80s metal on the records Blackout and the multi=platinum Love At First Sting. Now they have released their first unplugged album as part of their seemingly never-ending Farewell World Tour. You can stream the new album, MTV Unplugged – Live In Athens, right now at the Scorpions artist page here! The album contains an awesome mix of ’70s classics and ’80s hits. VH1 Classic will be airing the complete Scorpions MTV Unpugged concert this Friday, January 7th at 9/8C so don’t miss it!

Introducing AMERICA’S HARD 100, The First VH1 Classic Countdown Show Determined By Fan Votes!

VH1 Classic Presents America's Hard 100

For years and years, VH1 and VH1 Classic have been putting together awesome music-related countdown shows that run the gamut from the 100 Greatest Hard Rock Songs to the 40 Greatest Metal Songs. These shows were painstakingly put together after endless hours of debate from not just music critics and our crack team of show producers, but also with input from the artists themselves. However, VH1 Classic’s upcoming countdown show, America’s Hard 100, will be different in that it won’t be a team of producers who determine the show’s results — this time around, it will be YOU, the FANS, who determine which songs fall in which order!

Over the course of the next 2 weeks, we’ll be soliciting YOUR VOTES to determine what is the greatest hard rock song of all-time. We’ve put together a list of 100 songs that you’ll be able to choose from, broken down into 10 series of 10 songs, to make voting for your favorite hard rock songs as easy as possible. Each day for the next 10 days, we’ll reveal a new list of songs that you can vote on. Vote early and vote often –and for as many songs as you’d like!– and you’ll be able to see the final results when America’s Hard 100 airs in November.

Today, our list of 10 songs include songs from rock powerhouses like AC/DC, Led Zeppelin and Scorpions. Check back tomorrow at noon eastern to vote on the likes of Alice Cooper, Def Leppard and Twisted Sister. But for now, here’s our first group of 10 songs for you to vote on. Remember, it will be YOUR VOTES that determine the end result of America’s Hard 100!

That Metal Debate: Top 5 Michael Schenker Albums

This week on That Metal Show, TMS alum Frank Hannon (Tesla) returned to shred as our guest musician. Joining the boys on set were Michael Schenker, of UFO and MSG fame (and, in case you didn’t know, Eddie Trunk’s idol), and Mike McCready (Pearl Jam). Since Schenker has been playing music for the last 40 years, we thought we would dedicate this week’s TMS TOP 5 to him, and come up with a list of The Top 5 Albums that Michael Schenker has played on. Here it is, this week’s THAT METAL DEBATE.

Eddie, Don, and Jim each listed UFO’s Strangers In The Night on their Top 5 lists, so it was unanimous when deciding it was worthy of a Top 5 position. Though deciding how far up on the list is a different discussion as Eddie argued that the Scorpions Lonesome Crow wasn’t Schenker’s best album due to him only being 17 years old when it was recorded. As much we all love that album by the Scorpions, can you say that it is Schenker’s best work? What about UFO’s Obsession or Force it? With Schenker making music for over 40 years it’s a tough list to put together. After much debate and Eddie physically taking Lonesome Crow off the list (and throwing it into the crowd), the guys finally decided on their Top 5 Michael Schenker albums.
