10 Unexpectedly Awesome Cover Versions Of Classic Songs

10 Unexpectedly Awesome Covers

It’s a commonly held view that covers suck. They can be lame, unimaginative and tantamount to stealing someone else’s thoughts. Just ask Prince, who apparently wants to make covering songs illegal! Or at least his own songs…

“Why do we need to hear another cover of a song that someone else did?” he wondered aloud during an interview with Billboard. “Art is about building a new foundation, not just laying something on top of what’s already there.” But that’s not always the case. Every now and then you get a version that rethinks the tune from the ground up, and totally breathes new life into an old classic. Just check out these 10 amazing covers that came totally out of left field and shocked us with their awesomeness!

With nary a cloud visible all day long against the crisp Austin blue sky, there was no better place in the world for music fans to congregate than at the 2013 South By Southwest Music Festival yesterday. Living up to the festival’s promise of being able to deliver the music world’s most diverse musical lineup, we saw acts from no less than five different genres yesterday: Soul (Solange), hip-hop (Kendrick Lamar), country (Natalie Maines), singer-songwriter (Charlie Mars) and electropop (Chvrches).

Veuillez installer Flash Player pour lire la vidéo

Tuned In: Solange Lights Up Late Night With Jimmy Fallon With “Losing You”

Here’s how you warm a winter’s late night. Last night little sister, shining star Solange dropped by Late Night with Jimmy Fallon to perform her most lovely single “Losing You.” Her hair worn big and with her partner in quirky charm Dev Hynes by her side, she lit up the stage (and also our hearts). The song’s a bit lanky, but she’s so cool and so calm and she just takes her time, seeming to be oh, it’s no big deal about the very good performance she was giving. There was an adorably bouncy choreographed dance break at the end, matching retro-y outfits for everyone onstage and a hipness that just radiates throughout the whole thing. Those Knowles girls, they’re stars, you know?

Solange’s “Lovers In The Parking Lot” Has Nothing To Do With Parking Lots

Solange "Lovers in the Parking Lot"

Solange is defining her own womanhood in her own time. Now that eyes (globally!) gawking over her flawless style, she’s redirecting our focus to the music. “Lovers in the Parking Lot” is the second single from her upcoming EP, True. The Dev Hynes produced track with its light piano and cymbals instrumentation complement Solange’s smooth vocals. She sings, “Baby I love you, but I was not done having fun/played around with your heart/now I’m playing around in the dark.” Like her first single “Losing You,” the lyrics are unapologetically candid. This time she isn’t so concerned about losing her lover for good. In “Lovers in the Parking Lot” she recognizes she’s young and not done having fun. In the process she’s hurting the one she loves. All relatable to twenty and thirty-something women who love being in love, but enjoy the benefits of still playing, no strings attached. Being True to herself is bringing out the best in Solange. Destiny’s Child To Release New Material This Fall While We Cross Our Fingers For Reunion Tour

The ladies of Destiny’s Child have come a long way from the infectious “Bills, Bills, Bills” girl anthem of 1999. As one of the biggest girl groups of the 90s, we’ve long yearned for a DC reunion tour. That wish may not come true just yet, but we may be one step closer if Matthew Knowles has anything to do with it. Father of Beyonce and Solange, and powerhouse behind the success of DC and Beyonce, Matthew Knowles told HuffingtonPost unreleased music from DC will be released in November. “We still have our joint venture with Sony and in November we’re putting out two Destiny’s Child catalog records with new material,” said Knowles. The albums will include old material along with unreleased material, according to Knowles. Read more…

Beyonce, M.I.A., Justin Timberlake, Kanye West And More Of Our Favorite Musicians Get Dressed In Couture For The Met Gala

Beyonce, M.I.A., Justin Timberlake, Kanye West at the MET

Many of our favorite musicians were all about glitz and glam at last night’s annual Met Gala in New York City. The Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Gala, hosted by Vogue, is a night celebrating the opening of the museum’s fashion exhibit. Celebrity, fashion, couture, oh my! Think of the Oscars mixed with NYC Fashion Week and you have the visual of the red carpet at the Met Gala.

Artists from Beyoncé to Mick Jagger to Lana Del Rey to Kanye West turned heads on the red carpet with their stunning attire. It’s totally cool to see your favorite musicians taking a break from their walk-around-the-streets-of-LA gear and see them dolled up in Valentino and Rachel Zoe and Givenchy. Beyoncé, in particular, was a show stopper for the night in her sheer Givenchy gown. Solange was absolutely stunning in an all yellow Rachel Roy dress. Justin Timberlake kept it classic with an all black tux. Take a peek at some of our favorite musicians that put the “S” in stunning.

Beyonce Unleashes A Treasure Trove Of Never Before Seen Photos On Her New Tumblr

If you are an active member of the Tumblr community, your dashboard has no doubt been taken over this morning by Beyoncé. King B herself launched beyonce.tumblr.com this morning, a site that is chock full of pictures of Bey and her hubby Jay-Z enjoying the good life (and their untold riches) over the last few years. As you’ll recall, the couple decided to release the first pics of baby Blue Ivy Carter on the rapidly growing social blogging platform recently, which makes us think that they have invested some of their beacoup bucks in the site.

Either way, there are dozens upon dozens of pictures of B and J on the new site. Pictures of them smoking Cubanos together, relaxing in the French Riviera and just generally goofing off. There’s a bunch of solo Beyoncé pics, too, including her dressed up as Spiderman (Spiderwoman?), and even some snaps of her buried in the sand looking like the fly-est mermaid you ever did see. We’ve picked our 20 favorite pictures to share with you below, but be sure to head over to beyonce.tumblr.com and check them all out for yourself!

Which Actresses Should Play T-Boz, Left Eye And Chilli In VH1′s Upcoming TLC Movie?

If you weren’t a TLC fan in the 90s, you were either asleep for a decade or not born yet, and for both we’re willing to forgive you (and we hope you’re well-rested or enjoying your youth, respectively). Needless to say, we were massive TLC creeps and still are, so we’re pretty excited that our network, in collaboration with surviving band members, Chilli and T-Boz, have announced they’ll be making a scripted TLC bio-pic that will air on VH1. Obviously, we’re absolutely thrilled at the news, and have already started speculating as to what events in the history of TLC that this highly anticipated movie will cover. For now, though, we’re going to play casting director and make some suggestions as to who should play the some of the CraziestSexiestCoolest singers in music history…

CHILLI – SOLANGE KNOWLES
Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas was the quiet one, as far as quiet goes when you’re part of TLC. Solange is much the same, the quiet sister, or as quiet as a sister can be when she’s a Knowles. Not to be confused with shy, Chilli has this cool nonchalance that made her slightly enigmatic with this completely intriguing, subtle sex appeal. And she still had attitude, buckets of it — but she gave you this sense that she wasn’t giving you everything, although what she was giving was so beguiling you were always hankering for more. Enter Solange, whose soft harmonies we’d love to hear accompanying T-Boz’s gravelly voice. Both women give the impression that there’s so much more to them than meets the eye…

Solange Gives Big Sister Beyonce Tips For Motherhood

Last week, hip-hop journalist and cultural critic Dream Hampton tweeted, “I hate that Beyonce is being used as a poster child for being a married mother. Her single mother sister is her role model.” Whether or not you agree the first half of her statement, the latter is absolutely true, and considering Hampton is also the co-author of Jay-Z’s New York Times Best-Selling book Decoded, her opinion might possess more validity than most on this subject.

It goes without saying that, married or not, we’re thrilled about the Bey-Z bun in the oven, and last week, VH1 News’ Janell Snowden caught up with Beyonc?’s singing and DJing kid sister Solange at Fashion’s Night Out in NYC to chat about motherhood. Solange’s precious son Julez will be turning 7-years-old next month, and considering she had him at age 17, she had some qualified, heartfelt advice for her mom-to-be, superstar sister.
