Grimes, who you may have caught last week on Jimmy Fallon, has got a new video and it’s weird but totally awesome and beautiful, too. The self-directed “Genesis” clip first lands the Canadian synth-pop star in the twilight-y desert, her hair deadlocked and dancing in the headlights of an Escalade SUV. From there, things only get stranger, as an army of heroines played mostly by Grimes/women who look like Grimes show up to play: she swinging swords on the beach, wearing scant but shiny body armor in the suburbs, swinging sparklers on a roof, and — notably! — hanging out with a giant yellow python that looks an awful lot like Britney Spears “Slave 4 U” co-star, Banana (apparently!). Probably it’s just a snake that looks like Britney’s play thing, but when Grimes first pulls the snake out, and she’s in the back of a limo wearing pigtails and a sexy/sweet sailor’s uniform (a la Brit’s “Hit Me Look”), it’s hard not to wonder if she’s got some sort of point to make about pop stars then and now. Because she may be left-of-center, and she sure is not from the Mickey Mouse Club mold that Britney grew, but she’s a burgeoning pop star all her own.
It doesn’t matter if Kelly Clarkson were to sing the phone book. We’d want to hear it. When Clarkson put out the call to fans asking what songs they’d like her to cover the online requests flooded in. The Stronger tour that ended in April produced amazing covers of an array of musical genres. And like the great vocalist she is, Clarkson showed her range nailing everything from the Rolling Stones‘ “Wild Horses” to Bruno Mars‘ “It Will Rain.” When the tour ended our sad faces began, but luckily for us her Summer 2012 tour with The Fray has reignited the covers we were so obsessed with. Because we know you love the covers as much as we do, we’ve chosen the best five covers from Kelly Clarkson’s tour and concerts this year. Enjoy! Read more…
Counter to the well wishes of a Belieber Army’s parents, the object of their daughter’s worship is growing up and into himself. Justin Bieber has already worked through PDA and baby mama drama, and his recently sophomore album made a concerted effort to present a mature (or at least maturing) artist. And now, August’s Rolling Stone cover — which was revealed (via a retweet) today by the Biebs himself – declares the once precious pop star once and for all “HOT, READY, LEGAL.” Could it be? Justin has made the transition from “Baby” to “Boyfriend”, but does that make him “ready”? Did Rolling Stone jump the gun? You might want to take a deep breath now, because something tells us we have only seen the tip of the ice berg.
All pop stars grow up, and Justin is not the first young pop star to come out as an adult on the cover of Rolling Stone. Below, see three other celebrities who jump started the second stage of their careers with a “Too Soon?” declaration of maturity on the magazine’s front cover.
Based on this new promo, The X Factor will not be all fun and games and Vanilla Ice for Britney Spears. This first footage of Britney at the judges’ table finds Britney shooting down contestants, one after another after another. “Very predictable,” she tells one. “Bad to the bone,” the next. And then, one hand in the air, she snarls devastatingly, “You can’t destroy that song, sweetie.” Look out, Simon Cowell! Brit, apparently, has got a prerogative. Read more…
Britney Spears doesn’t care who’s around or who’s watching; if she wants to get jiggy with it she will. That is, if it’s a Vanilla Ice song. For Vanilla Ice she will happily jump to her feet, even if she’s at work and if even if none of her co-workers join in. Word to your mother. TMZ reports during the Greensboro, NC auditions for The X Factor Britney couldn’t help herself from boogieing to a contestant’s rendition of the popular 1990s “Ice Ice Baby.” Luckily, someone caught it on camera. Her dance moves are about as old as the song (we saw that little raising of the roof, Brit!), but who cares? The happy, not taking life too seriously Britney is a great look on her. With a new gig and fairly new fiancee there’s much for the pop star to dance about. Dance on. Read more…
Jamie-Lynn Spears looks up to —and looks a whole lot like— her big sister in this video of her performing her a song, “I Look Up To You,” performed last night at Nashville’s 3rd and Lindsley Bar and Grill. “You can imagine who I wrote it about,” she said, making no secret that it’s Britney she’s singing praise to. “I hope y’all like it a lot.”
“Scared little girl, sitting in a big old world,” she sings. “You’ve outgrown your room, it all happened way too soon. They took away your innocence, we forgot our strong defense.”
And so, for her history of breakdown and near demise, Jamie-Lynn sees a picture of — well, someone who very much needs a kind and nonjudgmental song like this. Jamie-Lynn doesn’t really get to the point of explaining what exactly she looks up to in Britney; rather, she mostly just sounds endlessly understanding, singing, “Whether you’re the sunlight shining down, or you hide behind a cloud, I look up to you.” It’s sweet gesture, even though it’s creepy that she looks so much like a pre-breakdown Britney while doing it. Not to mention, invoking her sister is also probably a helpful way to garner attention for her country singing career to-be.
Pop star diva Briney Spears can now add judge of The X Factor to her ridiculously long list of achievements. Back in March, rumors sparked about the starlet potentially joining judges Simon Cowell and L.A. Reid, but nothing was confirmed. E! News reports Spears signed a $15 million contract to judge one season of the popular singing competition show. Would you expect anything less for the one and only Britney Spears? Read more…
According to The Hollywood Reporter, they have it on good authority that Britney Spears is deep in negotiations (via her fiance Jason Trawick) to become a judge on The X Factor. Since the show axed judges Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger, there’s been speculation that Simon Cowell will be looking to replace them with some mighty super star strength — and Britney, love her or hate her, is undoubtedly one of the most powerful and influential women in pop. As Britney is signed to Sony Music’s RCA Records, which retains exclusive rights to X Factor artists, it wouldn’t be a stretch to imagine Britney on the show. While there’s no comment yet from Britney’s camp, Cowell coyly states, “There’s going to be a lot of twists and turns over the next few weeks and a lot of things we’re going to announce.”
The Hollywood Reporter opines on the matter; “As one of Sony’s Music’s marquee acts (33 million albums sold in the U.S. and counting), Spears brings legitimacy as a successful recording artist, something critics of X Factor say was missing in last year’s competition, as well as a level of unpredictability and drama that also was largely absent from the Fox show when Nicole Scherzinger and Paula Abdul were judges.” But what to you think? Would Britney be the perfect judge, given her long, iconic career in the pop spotlight? Or has Britney’s star dwindled with the rise of other popettes, throwing her credibility as a top-tier performer into question? Or do you not care, and think that regardless of her credentials, Brits will bring high drama to the show? Let us know in the poll below!

This Britney Spears Face Morph Is Pretty Creepy
This face morph of Britney — from baby to Mouseketeer to “Baby One More Time” to meltdown to now — is incredibly creepy. You’ll get your fair dose of Britney nostalgia, but also a pang of something like guilt as you watch the smile fade and her blonde locks replaced by a manic head shave and pink wig. [Idolator]
