CONCERT REVIEW: R&B Supergroup TGT Share The Love

TGT

With the temperature consistently in the 90s all last week, I was ready to embrace a different kind of “hotness” by the time Saturday rolled around. The kind of hotness that didn’t require me sweating my brains out, but one that would stimulate my eyes, ears… You get my drift. Well, my wishes were granted in the form of Tyrese, Ginuwine and Tank —collectively known these days as the R&B supergroup TGT—at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark.

Gotye’s Voice May Have Been Taken Off T.I.’s “Memories Back Then” But Peep The “Somebody That I Used To Know” Bassline Sample

T.I.‘s “Memories Back Then” featuring B.o.B, Kendrick Lamar and Kris Stephens on the chorus should’ve made Trouble Man: Heavy Is The Head. Originally the banger was titled “Somebody That I Used To Know” with a sample from Gotye from his song of the same name, according to Hip Hop Wired. Mary J. Blige’s Emotional Set Crowns Essence Music Festival’s Second Night

For the fifth time in as many years, Mary J. Blige graced the Essence Music Festival stage last night in New Orleans. Galvanizing her legion of ravenous fans during a set that followed main-stage performances from Tank, Mary Mary, Ledisi and comedian Kevin Hart, even the ushers were two-stepping unapologetically; in between performing a number of hits that spanned her entire twenty-year career, Blige also made time to unleash covers of Chaka Khan’s “Ain’t Nobody” and Charlie Wilson’s “Outstanding” for the Mercedes Benz Superdome crowd.

When the beat dropped for songs like “Real Love,” “Family Affair,” “Just Fine,” and “Not Gon’ Cry,” audience members took to their feet and assisted the sequin-clad star with lyrics and adlibs alike, creating an energetic exchange with their heroine that was, on more than one occasion, acknowledged by a grateful, “so pleased” Mary J. Blige. Read more…

May Playlist: Listen To Songs Featured On Your Fave VH1 Shows

At VH1, countless hours are spent determining what music best complements our shows. In fact, the team responsible for this task, known as the Creative Music Integration (CMI) group, listens to thousands of songs each month in an attempt to figure out how best to utilize musical cues to reinforce the emotion and drama on shows like Single Ladies and Basketball Wives. We thought it would be a cool idea to give you an inside glimpse into this world.

To this end, we’ve put together a list of all the songs featured on our network in May — from artists like Santigold, Estelle, Tank, Neon Hitch and up-and-comer Elle King. Additionally, we’ve included commentary from CMI team members as to why they selected songs for particular scenes as well as a Spotify playlist for you to sample. Enjoy, and stay tuned for our June playlist!
