Riding the wave of success from their latest album, Heartthrob, Canadian rockers Tegan & Sara are ready to take the party to Lollapalooza. VH1 Top 20 Video Countdown host Jim Shearer recently sat with the twins to chat about their upcoming performance in August.
Without a doubt, Tegan & Sara‘s “Closer” is, in addition to being the theme song of VH1′s latest brand campaign, one of the most anthemic songs of the new year. The identical twin sisters have been icons of the LGBT community since the outset of their career, which is one of the many reasons why we were so excited about them being booked as a musical act on last night’s NewNowNext Awards.
Nothing pairs better with wine than music in our opinion – well, a little food to stuff our face holes doesn’t hurt either. Live In The Vineyard had the best of all three last weekend in Napa, CA. New Kids On The Block popped their acoustic show cherry, Jim Shearer plotted to “kidnap” Tegan & Sara and newcomer Ginny Blackmore sang a beautiful cover of Rihanna’s ”Stay” in a cave. Read more…
We’re finally back from Austin and home in New York City, where we’re taking stock of what happened during the last 8 days of SXSW. We’re going through the early stages of breakfast taco withdrawal, but watching these incredible live performances from Tegan and Sara and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis from this year’s mtvU Woodies Awards is making the comedown go much smoother than anticipated.
“Pop music is cool again,” said 1/2 of the duo Tegan & Sara on Big Morning Buzz Live. “I think that people were scared to call music pop until recently because pop meant not very good.” Our favorite sister girl group took the stage to perform Heartthrob‘s hits “Closer” and The Con’s “Back In Your Head” with guitars in hand. Plucking away the sisters harmonize “I just want back in your head.” Read more…
Happy New Music Tuesday! Tegan & Sara‘s very excellent Heartthrob is out today (currently available for purchase on iTunes and streaming via Spotify). For their seventh album, the band wanted to switch things up a bit, drawing inspiration from their ’90s favorites and creating their own version of pop that’s dominating the mainstream. We sat down with the sisters to get the inside info on the album title, a tongue-in-cheek attempt at switching up some commonly held gender roles… at the expense of one of our most beloved boy bands.
What better way to cap off a great weekend than by snuggling up to your laptop for some live music? Our friends at MTV Hive are livestreaming Tegan & Sara‘s concert from Boston’s Brighton Music Hall, tonight at 8 p.m. ET/CT and you can watch the entire thing right here on VH1 Tuner! Read more…
What’s on your To Do list this weekend? Watching Tegan & Sara live in Boston, we hope! The lovely Quin ladies are just days away from the release of their seventh album, Heartthrob, and will be performing at Brighton Music Hall in Beantown Sunday, January 27 as part of MTV’s Artists to Watch Live in Boston series. Even if you don’t have a ticket to the show, or are rethinking ever leaving your house again given the current temperatures, you can enjoy the entire set from the comfort (and warmth) of your couch thanks to our friends at MTV Hive.
When a great television series is taken out to pasture, where can fans go to mourn together peacefully? Tumblr, for one, but what about the welcoming halls of VH1? We missed Best Week Ever so much we brought it back!
Tegan & Sara were gracious enough to stop by VH1 HQ to chat about their upcoming album Heartthrob–a 2013 release we can’t wait to hear–as well as the ’90s television shows they miss the most, and the vintage fashions they otherwise regret. The music video for lead single “Closer” has a distinct ’90s feel, and the band has previously said it was inspired by one of their favorite shows: the criminally short-lived but eternally beloved, My So-Called Life. Because we’re television junkies around these parts, too, we couldn’t help but ask them to elaborate on their early fascination with Angela, Rickie and Rayanne.
Now that 2012 is firmly in the rearviewmirror, it’s time to look forward with hope and optimism as to what the year 2013 holds in store for music fans like us. Considering that we’re not even three weeks into January and we’ve already been blessed with two delightful surprises —A new Destiny’s Child song! A new Timberlake jam!— we feel confident that this is going to be another banner year filled with an abundance of both monster pop smashes and crossover gems.
With that in mind, the VH1 Tuner team has put together this list of 13 of our most anticipated albums for 2013, which includes a healthy mix of familiar faces (Beyoncé, Lady Gaga) and artists on the come-up (Big Sean, Diane Birch), brought to you in the order of when we expect them to release their new material.
Tegan and Sara, Heartthrob (Expected Release Date: January 29): Sisters Tegan and Sara Quin have long been staples at alternative radio, but the synth-driven Heartthrob appears like it might be the LP that finally breaks them into the mainstream consciousness. “We really look at this as an opportunity to stretch into a world that we’ve been just outside of for a long time,” Sara recently told our VH1 News crew, and one listen to the album’s lead single, “Closer,” seems to be indicative of the fact that they’ve reached their goal.—Mark Graham
