July kicks off next week and that means 2013 is half over, y’all! A lot of music has been been released this year, and whether it’s via a returning veteran or a fresh up-and-comer, we now present you with VH1 staff picks for the best songs of the year (so far…)
Everyone knows the only way to heal a broken heart is to channel your emotions into an epic break up song. Some get their rage out screaming along with Alanis Morissette‘s “You Oughta Know,” while others opt for a more wistful sound, like Adele‘s “Someone Like You.”
But what about the songs themselves? Who inspired our favorite break up ballads? Did Russell Brand really prompt Katy Perry to pen “Part of Me?” And is “Cry Me A River” about Justin Timberlake‘s break up with Britney Spears? Which of your favorite break up songs are about true love gone wrong–and which were just born out of a lucky studio session?
Because they’re both good looking white dudes who make music that gets a lot of urban-format play, the media likes to draw comparisons between Robin Thicke and Justin Timberlake. When we sat down with Robin Thicke here at VH1 headquarters recently, we asked the debonair singer/songwriter what he thought of constantly being compared to JT. “If you really listened to our music and you didn’t know what we looked like, you wouldn’t compare us as much,” he explained.
Along with 1.3 million other people Jessie Ware is happy JT’s back. “Justin Timberlake, I’m so happy he’s back,” she said with her thick British accent. “I love the live version of “Pusher Girl.” Read more…
Have you been watching this season of T.I. And Tiny: The Family Hustle? You should be. Tip’s parenting skills are on point, whether it’s encouraging his pack to diversify their hobbies or reminding them that the “gangster” lifestyle is not something they necessarily want to emulate. Although we’re seeing the casual, off-duty T.I.– a man who is responsible for bedtime and keeping his brood healthy–on screen that doesn’t mean we’ve forgotten about his collection of hits that remain in steady rotation.
