Do You Agree With Billboard Crowning Rihanna The Top Pop Artist Of The Last 20 Years?

Billboard Crowns Rihanna Top Pop Artist Of The Last 20 Years

Is Rihanna worthy of the gold throne she’s seated in, in the above photo? Billboard thinks so as they’ve chosen her as the top pop artist of the last 20 years. With only seven years under her belt Rihanna beat out veterans Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, Jennifer Lopez, Usher and Celine Dion. As far as her peers she toppled her bestie Katy Perry, Beyonce, Lady Gaga and Chris Brown. Part of Riri’s success can be attributed to her ability to dish out catchy hit after hit. Her hooks hook you. No pun intended. The chorus and hooks immediately come to mind when you hear just the titles of “We Found Love,” “Where Have You Been,” “Umbrella,” “Birthday Cake” and countless others. Is Rihanna’s formula for mastering an infectious song why she leaves her counterparts slouching in the dust? Read more…

Of Course Usher Is Narcissistic Enough To Make Love To His Own Music

Forget about Oprah getting Usher to divulge on some of the most personal moments in his life. Well, that was important too, but it almost takes a backseat to his big revelation. The talk show veteran not only had the gall to ask him if he’s ever gotten it on to his own music, Usher answered honestly. Our guess prior to last night’s episode was that the southern R&B star would think it sort of weird to hear his crooning voice as he’s making the headboard hit the wall. But no, not Usher. He’s totally into that sort of thing. Read more…

BRACKET MADNESS: Do “U Got It Bad” For Usher Or Michael Jackson?

For our latest edition of Bracket Madness, we’re doing the unthinkable by matching up Michael Jackson and Usher. It seems almost blasphemous to pit the King of Pop against his young protégé whose career has been heavily influenced by the former. But here on Tuner, we love doing the unexpected.

There hasn’t been an artist as globally loved as Michael Jackson. Not to mention the fact that he’s recognized as the most successful entertainer of all time by the Guinness World Records. His star power is seemingly unmatched. MJ’s music was so great that naming all of the records he’s broken would take a Biblical scroll and hours upon hours that no one has. His 1982 album Thriller is the greatest selling record of all-time. Classic songs like “Rock With You,” “Don’t Stop ’til You Get Enough” and “Billie Jean” transcend generations, making a party full of early twentysomethings dance and sing wildly as if no one else were around. His dance moves (including the famous moonwalk!) have been emulated by some of today’s biggest stars, but no one does it like Mike. And his videos were epic short movies. When an MJ video premiered the family sat around the TV to watch it together. He truly was a once in a lifetime artist. Read more…

BRACKET MADNESS: Vote For VH1′s Greatest Male Artist!

This round of Bracket Madness calls forth the music’s men for a battle to the Greatest. Of all who have done it and are doing it, who do you think deserves the The Greatest Male Artist crown? The decision won’t be easy, but like with Greatest Artist of the 90s and Greatest Artist of 00s brackets before, with your votes and rallying we hope to whittle down a strong field of eight to but one. Who should it be?

Round One faces off American Idol stars Adam Lambert and Chris Daughtry; rap giants Lil Wayne and Kanye West; sweet singers Usher and Michael Jackson; and pop gods Justin Timberlake and Justin Bieber. Do you prefer the Idol stylings of Daughtry or Glambert? The way Lil Wayne twists his tongue or the ever innovative Kanye West? Justin Timberlake’s “Girlfriending”-ing or Justin Bieber’s “Boyfriend”-ing? The way MJ hits the high notes or Usher’s smooth moves?

Which of these fellas does it for you? It’s no easy choice, but with your votes it can be done. Voting for this first round closes Wednesday, September 19th at 11 a.m. Polls will then open for the second round at that time, and then close Friday, September 21 at 4 PM. The third and final round of voting opens Friday, September 21 at 4 PM and closes Monday, September 24th at 4 PM, at which point we will crown the Greatest Male Artist! Vote often and check back daily to see who’s in the lead!

Oprah Wants To Know If Usher Gets It On To His Own Music, And So Do We

Oprah‘s interviewing magic was never lost when she ended her talk show of 25 years to take on her OWN network; she just didn’t have the programming to yield high ratings. Fortunately with OWN’s Next Chapter, Oprah has struck gold by interviewing household names like Rihanna, Lady Gaga, 50 Cent and next up, Usher. Beyond Usher’s No. 1 Looking 4 Myself there’s been headlines galore of Usher’s divorce, ugly custody battle and the loss of his stepson. He’s kept quiet about his personal life over the last three years. That is until Queen Oprah called. Let’s face it, you don’t turn down an opportunity to sit on the couch with Mother O. Read more…

Usher And Chanel Iman Take A “Dive” In New Video

Usher doesn’t need a lifesaver, because he and Victoria’s Secret model Chanel Iman aren’t afraid to get wet together in this sepia-toned new video for “Dive.” The Looking 4 Myself ballad leaves little to the imagination — “It’s raining inside your bed, no parts are dry/ Loving makes you so wet, your legs and thighs,” “I’ll be inside when the tides are rolling, baby” etc. — and so it’s no surprise that the video goes all in on Usher’s Titanic fantasy. Out to sea, things go from steamy to soaked pretty quickly as the two get down to business on their luxury yacht. And nobody seems to mind when they are eventually submerged — Ursher Baby knows going deeper ain’t going to kill him. Read more…

Song Of The Summer 2012: Katy Perry May Have “Fallen From Cloud Nine” IRL, But “Wide Awake” Stays At #1

Welcome to Week 3 of VH1′s Song Of The Summer Countdown, brought to you by our good friends over at Dove Clinical Protection Deodorant. Each week from now until Labor Day, VH1 will be keeping tabs on which songs will ultimately come to define the summer of 2012, as measured by their performance across six categories: the VH1 Top 20 Video Countdown, Billboard‘s Hot 100, Spotify‘s most-streamed songs, the iTunes Singles Chart, YouTube’s music chart, and YOUR VOTES (which, btw, if you haven’t voted yet, you should totally vote now!).

Last week, Katy Perry outmuscled presumptive frontrunner Carly Rae Jepsen to overtake the #1 spot on our countdown, and the top of the chart remains the same this week. Buoyed by a strong number of votes from the Katycat contingent —only One Direction‘s “What Makes You Beautiful” and Pitbull and Shakira‘s “Get It Started” received more fan votes on sots.vh1.com— Katy Perry’s “Wide Awake” is staying put in the #1 position this week. (Subscribe to our VH1 Song Of The Summer 2012 playlist on Spotify!)

That doesn’t mean that she doesn’t have some challengers, though! In addition to Carly Rae Jepsen’s summer smash, Flo Rida’s “Whistle” lept up three spots to #7 this week, and the aforementioned One Direction climbed from #17 all the way to #7 with their irresistable hit, “What Makes You Beautiful.” Who will be on top next week? Be sure to check back with us all week for updates, and don’t forget to vote for the Song Of The Summer over at sots.vh1.com! (Oh, and if you want to see how this week’s chart was formulated, check out our super detailed/nerdy chart below.)

Life Is Good When You’re On Top, And Nas Is On Top With No. 1 Album

Life Is Good No.1

It’s a good thing we’re not Nas. With all the good news he’s had recently, we’re not so sure we could resist the temptation of celebratory cocktails every night. After the highly anticipated Life Is Good lived up to the hype, the numbers are in. Nasir Jones’ 10th album topped the Billboard 200 at No. 1 making this his fifth number one. According to Nielsen SoundScan, Life Is Good sold 149,000 in its first week, which is more than pop stars Usher (128,000) and Chris Brown (134,000) debuted. Don’t call it a comeback; because if you’ve paid attention, the Queens legend never really left. Read more…

It’s All About Having A “Good Time” When You’re Twentysomething Year Old Carly Rae Jepsen And Adam Young Of Owl City

When is life not a good time when you’re a twentysomething rising star? For the visual to “Good Time,” Carly Rae Jepsen and Owl City‘s Adam Young take a quick trip to a cabin in the woods with their other twentysomething friends all looking to have a blast. By day the group rock out in the car while road tripping. Once they’ve arrived they take their slushies to the wilderness to trollop through the pebbles and swamp barefoot. By night they build a campfire and pitch a tent. But not to be confused with a regular weekend in the woods only complete by roasting s’mores (although they do that too!). CRJ and Adam Young have a full-out party, making it a good time to remember. Read more…
