Zac Brown Band And Frank Ocean Hold Down The No.1 And No. 2 Spots On Billboard Charts

Zac Brown Band and Frank Ocean Top the Charts

It’s been a great year on the Billboard charts for country music artists like Carrie Underwood and Zac Brown Band. Last week’s Billboard 200 numbers are in, and Zac Brown Band scored big, holding down the No. 1 spot for Uncaged. Uncaged debuted with sales of 234,000, higher than predicted. With eight No. 1 singles in their catalog and their 2010 No. 1 album You Get What You Give there’s no surprise the group would soar to the top. Behind the seasoned ban at No.2 is R&B newcomer Frank Ocean. Read more…

Song Of The Summer 2012: Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe” Is The Early Frontrunner

Music is something that plays an integral part in our lives 365 days a year, but there is something about the summertime that makes music seem a bit more omnipresent than at other times of the years. For most of the year, music consumption is largely a solitary pursuit; it’s something you experience in your house and in your car, and for big city dwellers and gym enthusiasts, it generally exists between you, your iPhone, and your earbuds. However, when summer rolls around, all of a sudden MUSIC IS EVERYWHERE — You hear it at family barbeques in the park, rooftop parties with your friends, blaring from car windows as you walk down the street. And more often than not, you tend to hear the same songs playing in an endless loop, returning us to the days when music was more of a communal experience and not so niche.

To that end, VH1 and Dove Clinical Fresh Deodorant are teaming up to track what song will emerge as this year’s Song Of The Summer, the one song that everyone will always associate with the summer of 2012. Each Monday here on VH1 Tuner, we’ll be counting down the Top 20 Songs of the Summer, as determined by SIX key metrics: Position on VH1′s Top 20 Video Countdown, Billboard‘s Hot 100, iTunes Singles Chart, Spotify, YouTube’s music chart and … wait for it … YOUR VOTES!

Yes, that’s right, we added a new wrinkle to this year’s countdown. Simply visit sots.vh1.com (SOTS = Song Of The Summer, get it?) and cast YOUR vote for your favorite song on either Twitter or Facebook (or both, if that’s how you roll). Do you love some Carly Rae Jepsen? Vote for her! Do you Directioners feel like One Direction‘s “One Thing” or “What Makes You Beautiful” should be higher on the chart? Vote for them! Are you a die-hard Yeezy fan and think that this summer is all about “Mercy”? Then you should definitely vote for it! Don’t see your favorite song on the list? Hit us up on our @vh1music Twitter feed and, if we see enough volume, we’ll add it to our list of over 50 songs that you can vote on.

Frank Ocean’s Channel Orange Is Doing Big Things With Expected 110-125K Sales

Frank Ocean Expected To Sell 110-125K Albums

It’s true. People don’t buy albums in massive numbers like the distant days of the 80s or 90s where going triple platinum wasn’t uncommon. That said, R&B sensation Frank Ocean is projected to do big numbers after digitally releasing Channel Orange a week early on iTunes after his appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. The Def Jam artist is expected to open with 110,000-125,000 sales just from an iTunes release, which is pretty impressive considering he’s a new artist and had no additional retail push. Considering veteran Usher opened with 128,000 for Looking 4 Myself and Chris Brown topped charts at No. 1 with 134,000 sales for Fortune‘s opening week, Ocean’s slated success is a testament that fans will buy what they believe is quality music. Chris Brown’s Winning A “Fortune” With No. 1 Album

Chris Brown Fortune No. 1

From F.A.M.E. to Fortune, Chris Brown lands his second No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 charts with Fortune. According to Nielsen SoundScan, Fortune has already sold 134,000 copies. Popular songs like lead single “Turn Up the Music,” which reached No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and “Till I Die” encompassed the diversity of dance, pop, R&B and hip-hop that Breezy’s fans expect. Two No. 1 albums in two years is a success worth celebrating, especially considering both his past missteps and current drama with Drake, but could there be a decreased interest in the pop star? Comparatively 2011′s F.A.M.E. dropped atop the list with 270,000 units sold, which is more than double the sales of Fortune. Read more…

The Top 3 Performances At The 2012 BET Awards

BET Awards 2012 Whitney Houston Tribute

Yes, the royal couple of hip-hop and R&B were at last night’s BET Awards, front and center. Beyonce and Jay-Z were the second and third most nominated artists (respectively) of the night, only behind their play brother Kanye West. Although the Carters didn’t perform it was a great night for both hip-hop and R&B. Usher, Chris Brown, Melanie Fiona, Maybach Music Group crew, Nicki Minaj and countless others brought their A game. As hard as it was to choose only three, here are our top three performances from BET Awards 2012.

3. G.O.O.D. Music swerved on everybody.

Nothing gets a crowd hype like dropping the beat to one of the hottest songs of the summer. Big Sean emerges on top of a neon lit Lamborghini to the beat of “Mercy.” Pusha T delivers his verse followed by 2 Chainz. The crowd explodes when 2 Chainz hits the stage. It’s safe to say 2 Chainz is the latest rap phenomenon. Being Kanye he skips his “Mercy” verse and appears as the beat changes to “Way Too Cold.”  When he finishes his first verse, he raps an acapella freestyle before dropping the mic. It doesn’t get much better than that for an opener. Read more…

Summer Jams: Zara Golden Picks Three Of Her Fave “Song of the Summer” Candidates

Music sounds better in the summer, everyone knows this. It gets bigger, so we can bang it from our cars; and other times it gets weirder, because the sun’s got us spinning anyways. Most of all, the promise of Labor Day —when we can put away our “Call Me Maybes” with our white pants— begs repeat listening. Thusly, if you need me, I’ll be listening to one of these Song Of The Summer this summer:

NOMINATION: Justin Bieber, “Boyfriend”
EXPLANATION: So what if it’s not really “chilling by the fire while we’re eating fondue” season? There is nothing this season so sweet as this falsetto bridge “I like to be everything you want / hey girl let me talk to you.” While being a little amateurish, his breathy rapping recalls the Ying Yang Twins’ “Whistle Song” in all the right ways; and the Justin Timberlake-like guitar picked chorus isn’t so bad, either.

“Scream” For Usher Using The Greatness That Is Fuerza Bruta In New Video

Usher joining forces with Fuerza Bruta for a Cirque du Soleil of sorts experience for the Looking 4 Myself listening party was both innovative and a wonderful production. It was so incredible Usher decided the video to his second single “Scream” would piece together his performances from the night of his Fuerza Bruta collaboration. If you are looking for a more concrete video that correlates with the song you may wonder what’s going on. But once you’ve made it to the end you understand why this was the perfect concept.
