French Montana‘s iced out. Three big a*s diamond chains are draping his neck as he stands in VIP, entourage galore, hidden behind dark sunglasses. NYC’s HiLo is packed with industry heads, reality stars, other rappers and droves of ladies and gents there only for bragging rights to say they were there. Read more…
What beautiful music are Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett planning on making together? What does Jerry Seinfeld think about the work of his fan, Wale? This and more in First Dibs.
It’s official: the NBA is breaking up with hip-hop. Shaq, Ron Artest, and anyone else who has blown a majority of their paychecks on studio time, you might want to sit down for this. Last week Lil Wayne was complaining about being kicked out of American Airlines Arena during a Miami Heat game, and now hometown hero Wale can’t get any respect while watching his Wizards (lose, badly) in person.
To build excitement ahead of his fifth album Jesus Piece‘s arrival on December 11th, Game has been dropping new music each week, #SundayService style. This week the Compton rapper and soon-to-be hitched Marrying The Game star used the pulpit to share a Wale collaboration called “Stripper.” Not your grandmother’s Sunday Service, this latest installment pays homage to dancers, but not the kind you’ll see at Lincoln Center.
Over a lazy and soulful beat, he goes into great (and often vulgar) detail as to the things he likes about strippers: work ethic (“She got two jobs, work late, college courses on her plate”), her look (“Them high heels, that black lace, that long weave”) and their taste in music (“UGK on the iPod”). He’s got one girl in particular on his mind, a girl with hips “like the kit of a Challenger” and she’s “the best [Drake's] ever had”: Maliah Michel.
“I knew Maliah before Maliah went to H-Town and that’s straight up,” he raps, staking certain claims for Drake’s -ex. And as for Drake’s tendency to rap about her, Game sounds like he’s not having it: “Drake talking ‘bout her /Make a n**** mad, you heard that song? Yeah, best that he ever had.” Wale chimes in in agreement, but unlike Drake, he is careful not to step on Game’s toes: “My favorite stripper although I got some options.”
Marrying The Game airs Monday night at 9:30 p.m. ET/PT, and don’t miss our recaps over at the VH1 Blog!
Rick Ross‘ “Diced Pineapples,” featuring a spoken word intro from MMG affiliate Wale and a sweet hook by Drake, has had us scratching our heads since the beginning. When it was just a title on a track list, we wondered what on earth Ross might have to say about the titular golden fruit. Before it’s release, he suggested that it was inspired by his doctor mandated post-seizure diet, when he ate woke up every morning at at diced pineapples at his doctors insistence. But then we heard the slow-and-sexy song and realized that it’s not about pineapple at all, really. There’s a little fruit-as-sex (“diced pineapple make make my baby taste the best”) and fruit-as-riches (“diced pineapples, talking diamonds by the jar”) action, but it’s otherwise a pretty standard Bawse affair.
And so we held out hope that Ross might go in on a pineapple in the video the way he did that steak in the “So Sophisticated” video. Unfortunately, that’s not the case, as the video that arrived last night features only a flash of pineapple (see below). Instead, the Vitamin C deficient feature finds Ross and his boys and a bunch of pretty ladies taking in beautiful Caribbean sunsets while enjoying a well Instagram-ed vacation. You know, a relaxing affair, just like the doctor would prescribe. Read more…
Let Wale tell it on his new track “Arrival,” the first album was slept on while the second one brought on the groupies. He’s back in the studio working on his third album as the rest of his Maybach Music Group puts in overtime to take over as the leading rap crew in the game. Fans of Wale’s early mixtape days will be happy the D.C. native has returned to his proverbial roots. An old school sample serves as the slowish instrumentation on “Arrival” where he jumps right in addressing the controversy over no dark skinned black women being featured in “Pretty Girls.” “Love a dark sister, but I ran through lights like medic routes.” Read more…
Cruel Summer may be on constant rotation on our iPods as we analyze how the compilation album measures against Kanye West‘s previous projects, but Atlanta rapper Roscoe Dash is probably using the album as a coaster. See, Roscoe Dash is upset about not being in the credits of Ye’s video about the making of the album. Instead of remaining silent he took to Twitter to air out Yeezy for the omission in the credits for “To The World,” which he says his ad libs can be heard on. “Everybody go get the G.O.O.D album and listen to #1 then watch @kanyewest interview… & tell me y I’m not on the credits,” he tweeted. “Can’t do favors for n—– bcuz no matter how humble and generous u r to ppl n—– will take everything u have… Even n—- u look up to.” This man is clearly fearless because doesn’t he know Ye will slay him in a song? As we’ve been noting all week, it’s Coitus Cuffin’ Season, and there’s an elephant in the room that needs to be addressed. As you woo your Cuff targets over the next few months, it’s important to stay confident and keep your eye on the prize. Flowers and romantic candlelit dinners are cute and all, but if you’re looking to successfully procure a lasting relationship partner who’s not shy in the bedroom, you’ve got to make sure that you’re ready to, borrowing wisdom from Cuban Link, make it hotter than lava when you climb up in the cama.
Don’t worry, you got this! And if you’re a smidge apprehensive, I got you. Monday we made some suggestions for dealing with Hopeless Romantics, and yesterday we brought up the topic of reeling-in the Distracted Workaholics. Today’s lesson though, is a bit more intimate. And naughty. And for you conventional types, potentially offensive. Below you’ll find Doin’ It Well: Bagging A No-Holds-Barred Freak, a Spotify playlist molded to rev your sexual engines in preparation for what happens “Between The Sheets.”
No artist is exempt from the sometimes beastly Internet where leaked albums are downloaded frequently. Yesterday Rick Ross‘ highly anticipated God Forgives I Don’t leaked six days early, but Ross was very chill about the leak. Hey, why be mad when you’re a boss? After realizing fans were already jamming to his fifth album he tweeted, “#GFID out there so vibe to it..enjoy it..buy it Tuesday!!!” Ross may be busy cultivating his Maybach Music Group squad, but for his own project he enlisted a few heavy hitting MMG outsiders like Jay-Z, Andre 300 and Dr. Dre. But it’s “Diced Pineapples” featuring Wale and Drake that caught our attention. Read more…
