You Oughta Know artists continue to make us proud. Last year’s featured act, Walk The Moon, stopped by VH1 HQ on this snowy Monday morning to perform “Tightrope” on the latest edition of Big Morning Buzz Live. Today’s visit marks their third trip to our very own morning show, and the group was more than willing to accept their newly-minted record with a spirited rendition of their title track and good humored enough to put up with questioning about a full-length LP. We’re sorry to nag, boys, but we just can’t wait for more music.
The new video for Walk The Moon‘s “Tightrope” drops the boys into a campy camp-ground dance party, complete with face-paint like they wont and woodland creatures seemingly still dancing off Taylor Swift’s last break-up. The boys are joined round the roaring orange campfire by dancing lions and tigers and zebras, and also some warriors carrying worrisome weapons and looking hungry for the blood of a You Oughta Know artist. Looking only a little concerned, the boys get on their trademark face paint — which, for the record, looks seriously expert compared to the smeared on war paint-style look they wore in the “Anna Sun” video — and start rocking. Are these guys ever not having fun? So serious as they are about making good music, they are about having a good time — and here, that really shows.
UPDATE (10/1/12): Sorry, we removed the MP3. You can still listen to the song in our video player above ’til your heart’s content, though!
We have been rocking with September’s You Oughta Know artists Walk The Moon all month long now, and we’ve been jamming on “Anna Sun” for even longer than that, but we still can’t get enough of the song. We love it’s sun-drenched synths, the way it insists we not let growing up get in the way of a good time and the way the guys got so sweaty while performing it for their You Oughta Know Live session. And now, we love the most that we can keep their sweaty performance in our iTunes and on our iPods because now there’s an MP3!
You can download an MP3 of Walk The Moon’s rattling “Anna Sun” performance here on VH1 Tuner for free! But be quick — the link expires at midnight on October 1st and you don’t want to miss out.
VH1 Top 20 Video Countdown‘s Jim Shearer will do anything to get the exclusive story. That includes following our You Oughta Know artist, Walk The Moon, into the men’s restroom to talk about pancakes. Luckily, his bravery doesn’t stop there. We have a playlist of Jim asking the good, great and wonky questions to various musical acts. VH1 Storytellers alum Jason Mraz told Jim his choice for two of the greatest hip-hop songs of all time were. Despite the impossible task, Mraz said, “I’m gonna go with ‘Rapper’s Delight’ ’cause I think that inspired a generation.” “And I’m also a fan of, and this is my generation, Young MC, Stone Cold Rhymin’ was the album…and I can’t think of the name of the song.” Guess we’ll never know what that second song was, but Mraz is certain it wasn’t “Bust A Move.” Read more…
The stage set for their You Oughta Know Live session, Walk The Moon insisted on kicking things off with their cover of David Bowie‘s “Let’s Dance” before they did anything else. Few songs in the history of music dial up the energy so quickly, and fewer songs yet have been able to articulate serious fun so aptly as “Let’s Dance,” and so of course a band so striving for a good time would take it as a warm-up. And so dance Walk The Moon did while they worked through the jam, throwing in yelps, harmonized vocals and a ripping guitar solo as needed. And then through the rest of their Live session let’s sway, shall we? Read more…
September’s You Oughta Know artists Walk The Moon got a little sweaty during their You Oughta Know Live session. It’s hard work to make music so high energy and fun, and these four boys from Cincinnati throw themselves fully into it. During their session, they played a number of songs from their self-titled debut album (“Shiver Shiver,” “Anna Sun,” and “Tightrope”) and one cover (coming soon!), whipping the sweat from their brows between songs but never tiring. Because, really, the best way to insure that the ghost towns get thoroughly rattled is to rock extra hard.
We kept their Neverland-inspired anthem “Anna Sun” on loop all summer, its sunny synths and calls of freedom charging the warm months and long days. Now that fall has crept in on us and school bells are back ringing, we’ll keep listening, but now for new and maybe collegiate notes.
“‘Anna Sun’ is very much a product of the post-college,” Walk The Moon lead singer/keyboardist Nicholas Petricca told us before their Live taping. “I loved college, and I think we all had an awesome experience around that time of our lives, and I was feeling a lot of nostalgia and sadness and also excitement, of course, because it’s the beginning of who knows what. And so this song is very much about that in between space, and feeling like I am a kid but I am supposed to be an adult and how can I be both.”
So, here’s to lingering summers and looking towards fall! Watch their rattling performance of “Anna Sun” above, and then check out the rest of their You Oughta Know Live set here.
Excitement turned way up in anticipation of tonight’s big show, things got a little wild at MTV’s pre-VMA bash last night. The evening was headlined by notoriously hard-partying Justin Bieber pals The Wanted, who surprised the crowd by inviting fellow Scoot Braun signee PSY onstage for a little “Gangnam Style” action. Afterwards, the boys took the occasion of band member Max George‘s birthday as an opportunity to shove a cake in his face at the end of their set. Glad you came? Read more…
On repeat all the while, “Anna Sun” kept our summer synch-drenched and charged with Neverland-like fantasies of ghost towns rattled. And now with fall is upon us, we are excited to announce that two time Big Morning Buzz Live veterans Walk The Moon will represent as September’s You Oughta Know artist! And so alas, the fun does not ever have to stop. The Cincinati foursome dropped by VH1 headquarters last month to play an high energy and hard working — also, sweaty! — You Oughta Know Live set, which we’ll roll out throughout the month. And until then, our photographer Lauren Weissler tagged along, capturing their day, down time, perspiration, face paint and all, to give you a peak behind the scenes. Have a look!
Being the serious Walk The Moon fan that he is, VH1 Top 20 Video Countdown‘s Jim Shearer made sure to waste not a moment with the boys while they were at VH1 headquarters yesterday. With a camera in hand and a long list of tough questions at ready, he followed the boys into the men’s bathroom to catch their pre-Big Morning Buzz Live warm-up and then to the green room for some serious breakfast talk. And as it turns out, Walk The Moon do not believe in pancakes.
“I don’t think we are an anti-pancake band, I just don’t think we are a pancake enthusiast band,” Nick offered. Meanwhile, Sean was less diplomatic, suggesting instead that, “[Pancakes] are sent from the devil.” And as for Kevin, he likes waffles. The more you know! Read more…
Walk The Moon swung back by VH1 headquarters yesterday, to announce their September You Oughta Know gig and book-ending the summer with a Big Morning Buzz Live performance. A lot has happened since we first met the boys from Cincinnati in June — they’ve celebrated their eponymous label debut, toured Europe, and won hearts and sound-tracked the hot months with their song of the summer, “Anna Sun” — and, now with September and their month of You Oughta Know upon us, they are only just getting started!
They showed up yesterday with just acoustic guitars and suitcases, and with Nick wearing again a Navajo print shirt (can’t fix what’s not broken), to bang out their quick-stepping next single, “Tightrope.” All warmed up, they then shipped off to get ready for their You Oughta Know Live session. More on that soon! Because if you don’t know Walk The Moon yet, we think you really oughta.
