Shondaland Actors Who Disappeared

What happens when you get banished from Shondaland?

To be cast in a Shonda Rhimes show is a dream come true for most actors. But, for some, time in Shondaland is brief. And when you’re banished from the kingdom, what comes next? Here’s what these former Shondaites are up to today.

  • 1 Katherine Heigl

After very famously declaring that she was “given the material this season to warrant an Emmy nomination” and withdrew herself from Emmy consideration in 2008, Heigl earned herself a nomination to Shonda Rhimes’s sh-t list. She made a string of rom-coms, won a Razzie for One for the Money and appeared in a commercial for ZzzQuil. She got a new chance with her own show State of Affairs but it was ultimately canceled.

  • 2 T.R. Knight

After a “breakdown in communication” with Rhimes, Dr. George O’Malley got hit by a bus and Knight got sent off into the great Shondaless unknown. That unknown includes the theater where he’s appeared in the musical Parade and David Mamet’s A Life in the Theater with Patrick Stewart. He’s currently starring in It’s Only a Play on Broadway.

  • 3 Isaiah Washington

After Washington very famously called T.R. Knight a gay slur, his contract went unrenewed in 2007. He did a string of talk show appearances to defend himself, blaming racism for his dismissal. He returned for a guest spot on Grey’s last season and now stars on The 100. He stars in the 2015 film Blackbird alongside Mo’Nique.

  • 4 Eric Dane

After McSteamy died after injuries sustained in a McPlane Crash in 2012, Eric Dane had a quiet couple years until picking up steam (sorry) again on TNT’s The Last Ship.

  • 5 Chyler Leigh

Lexie died thanks to the same plane crash that took Dr. Mark Sloan. Leigh went on to star in Taxi Brooklyn, which appeared to be an abundantly weird show if you saw clips of it on The Soup, and will next appear on CBS’s Supergirl.

  • 6 Brooke Smith

After being in a lesbian relationship with Callie Torres on Grey’s, the character Erica Hahn was written out of the show in November 2008, to the shock of Smith. She appeared in episodes of SVU and American Horror Story before landing a recurring role on Showtime’s Ray Donovan.

  • 7 Columbus Short

Harrison Wright was a great character who received a touching graveside farewell. Columbus Short on the other hand was arrested for physically attacking his wife, leading to his death in the season three finale. Because Shonda will straight up kill you if you disappoint her. He most recently appeared in The Girl Is in Trouble with Wilmer Valderrama.

  • 8 Henry Ian Cusick

Where other Shondaland ex-pats said it of themselves, Rhimes herself actually admitted she didn’t have enough for Cusick to do after season one. She told TV Guide, “In the making of the show, there was less for him to do than is deserving of him. I felt, why hold him back from doing other things?” He’s now on The 100 with fellow former Shondaland citizen Isaiah Washington.

  • 9 Tim Daly

Another dead body. Dr. Pete Wilder met his untimely end in 2012 from a heart attack caused by Daly’s desire to leave Private Practice (watch your salt intake and don’t leave Shonda shows — you’ll live longer). After guest spots on Hawaii 5-0, Hot in Cleveland, and The Mindy Project, he now resides on Madam Secretary on CBS.

  • 10 Chris Lowell

According to Lowell, his 2010 exit from Private Practice was a positive, mutual decision, and only in Shondaland does that mean deadly brain hemorrhages. He went on to appear in The Help, reprise his role as Piz in the Veronica Mars movie and star in FOX’s very loved but very quickly canceled Enlisted. [/item
