10 Hard-Living Celebrities Who Are Somehow Still Alive and Kickin’

I will survive!

Everyone has that one friend who lives dangerously close to the edge. This means various things for different friend groups. For some, it’s eating a doughnut the day before a big track meet—gasp! For others, it’s doing a shitload of drugs. Hard-living celebrities tend to fall in the latter category. And it can get scary. Seriously, it’s a miracle some of these stars are still alive, but we’re very thankful they are. They’re all tremendous talents, and we congratulate them for not letting their hard-living ways (either present or past) get the best of them. From Charlie Sheen (who turns 50 today!) to Lindsay Lohan, these A-listers are the epitome of recklessness and resilience.

The former Two and a Half Men star is a notorious party boy with past affinities for cocaine, high-end escorts, and trashing hotel rooms—well, if you believe the tabloids. But it seems like Charlie always has the last laugh. His FX show Anger Management ran for 100 episodes, and he has a new film—Paranormal Activity Security Squad—slated for release later this year. Maybe he’s actually winning after all.

Poor Lindsay. She’s been to rehab six times and has openly discussed her struggles with alcohol and drugs. (In fact, during an interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2014, she even labeled herself an alcoholic.) But Ms. Lohan is still doing her thing. She’s made a string of films over the past few years, including The Canyons and Scary Movie 5 (both 2013).

Courtney has been sober since 2007—and even confirmed her sobriety in 2011—but she was the epitome of hard living prior to getting clean. She was addicted to heroin in the ’90s and made several very intoxicated TV appearances in the mid-2000s, notably The Late Show with David Letterman. In 2004, she attempted suicide. But a six-month rehab stint saved her life, which is now significantly less hard.

The rapper told Access Hollywood he came close to death when he was abusing pills. “I had overdosed in 2007, like right around Christmas in 2007….,” he said. “Pretty much almost died…. I scared myself, like, ‘Yo! I need to, I need help.” He’s now sober and slaying the music game like a king.

  • 5 Robert Downey Jr.

Robert spent many years, as he puts it, in a “hopeless state…snorting coke” and using heroin and crack. He’s been sober since 2003 and is now the highest-paid actor in Hollywood. This is the definition of “alive and kickin’.” We’re happy for him.

Charlie Sheen’s ex-wife has overdosed six times and spent a whopping 20 stints in rehab. (In other words, rock-hard-and-will-never-thaw living.) Unfortunately, she still copes with addiction issues, but she’s also still alive, and we wish her the strength to make a full recovery.

  • 7 Drew Barrymore

Drew’s hard living began at a frighteningly young age. She was around 10 when she smoked pot for the first time, and then alcohol and cocaine followed shortly after. She attempted suicide and landed in rehab before even getting her full driver’s license. “It was gradual,” Drew said. “What I did kept getting worse and worse, and I didn’t care what anybody else thought.” Now, the hardest stuff Drew touches is wine, and she makes money off of that.

  • 8 Samuel L. Jackson

Early in his career, Samuel battled strong alcohol and cocaine addictions. In fact, they were so bad he actually was replaced in two plays before they hit Broadway. One of his first gigs post-rehab (ironically) was a crack-cocaine user in Jungle Fever (1991), a role SLJ found therapeutic. And it did wonders for his career: He won the Supporting Actor award at the Cannes Film Festival for it, which was created that year just for him. From hard living to hard slaying, eh?

  • 9 Colin Farrell
Colin entered rehab in 2005 to conquer his dependency on drugs and painkillers; he also hasn’t had a drink since 2006. The once-wild party boy whose future was questionable now has a flourishing career and solid relationship with his two children. “I could have [gotten sober] earlier, for sure, and I would have saved a lot of money and a good deal of heartbreak, but I’m lucky enough to have made it anyway and I’m grateful for that. So better late than ever,” Colin told The Telegraph in 2014. #HusbandGoals.

  • 10 Angelina Jolie

In the late ’90s, Angelina was knee-deep in addictions to cocaine and heroin. She is sober now and went on record in 2011 saying she can’t believe she’s alive. “I went through heavy, darker times and I survived them,” she told 60 Minutes. “I didn’t die young, so I’m very lucky. There are other artists and people who didn’t survive certain things … I think people can imagine that I did the most dangerous and I did the worst—and for many reasons I shouldn’t be here.” We’re certainly glad she is.
