7 Musicians Who Believe In Out-There Conspiracy Theories

Of course Kanye West makes the list.

If you thought Kanye West was crazy, wait until you hear this: The rapper actually thinks AIDS is a man-made disease—as in cooked up by humans. On a scale from 1 to bananas, this is definitely off the charts.

But it’s not the only bizarre conspiracy theory musicians view as cold-hard fact. From mermaids to chemtrails and even sperm-hunting witches (yup), you won’t believe the wack stuff your favorite artists have cooked up in their heads. (Or, who knows, maybe you will.)

  • 1 David Bowie: Witches are stealing my sperm.

In 1975, David was so blitzed on cocaine he actually thought witches were stalking him in attempt to steal his sperm. He also thought The Rolling Stones were sending him secret messages and that Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Paige practiced witchcraft. Talk about paranoia. (Drugs, man.)

  • 2 Willie Nelson: The Sept. 11 terrorist attacks were an inside job.

The country icon is one of many celebrities who think government officials manufactured the 9/11 Twin Towers attack. Other believers include Woody Harrelson, Rosie O’Donnell and Charlie Sheen.

  • 3 Prince: Chemtrails are real.

The funk maverick avidly believes in chemtrails, white emissions left by airplanes in the sky that (allegedly) cause death and bizarre behavior. “Then you started to see a whole bunch of [chemtrails], and the next thing you know, everybody in your neighborhood was fighting and arguing and you didn’t know why,” Prince mused in an interview. Yikes.

  • 4 Courtney Love: The missing Malaysia Airlines plane is under water.

The rocker posted a very cryptic Facebook message in March 2014 about the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. Using an online satellite imagery map, Courtney spotted an oil slick and hypothesized the plane was submerged under water. Eerie, huh?

  • 5 Kanye West: AIDS is a man-made disease.

At the 2005 Live 8 concert, Kanye said AIDS is a “man-made disease” that actually was “placed in Africa just like crack was placed in the black community to break up the Black Panthers.” It’s a pretty outrageous thing to say, but are you surprised? This came from the man who announced his bid for the 2020 presidency stoned at the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards.

  • 6 Axl Rose: Cities that start with the letter M are under a curse.

The Guns N’ Roses lead singer has a vendetta against Montreal, Minneapolis and other cities with the same first letter–so much he actively avoids setting foot in them. He thinks they’re all bad luck. This one seems a little far fetched, but weirder things have happened.

  • 7 Demi Lovato: Mermaids are a form of alien species that live in the Indian Ocean.

Alright, this might be the best conspiracy theory. On Late Night with Seth Meyers, Demi professed her belief mermaids are an alien species that live in parts of the Indian Ocean humans haven’t explored. And her evidence? An Animal Planet documentary that was later deemed fictional. Tough luck, Demi. (We want Ariel to be real, too.)
