Music Marriages That Were So Short, They Might Not Have Happened

When love actually doesn't last forever.

The entertainment industry at large isn’t typically a place that fosters stable romantic relationships, and the lives of arena-packing musicians seem to hold particular hazards ready to divide even the strongest of unions. The constant travel and time apart, seemingly non-stop partying, and untold number of groupies all could spell “divorce” — and potentially, “paternity suits.”

While some musical marriages were long players, many more were mere flashes of pyrotechnics on the great stage of life. We’ve found a bunch that can only be measured by months and days (and therefore just hours). Some of these splits totally broke our hearts — Katy Perry and Russell Brand, for example – while others were for the best. Peep the gallery for the shortest marriages in music.

  • 1 Kid Rock and Pamela Anderson
    Getty Images
    Split after: 4 months (July 29, 2006 – November 26, 2006)

The Baywatch babe has been fairly unlucky in love, and her union with Mr. Rock was the quickest. Pamela’s on-again-off-again relationship with first husband Tommy Lee had a bit more staying power, lasting from February 1995 to June 1998, a.k.a. too long for this list.

  • 2 Britney Spears and Jason Alexander
    Getty Images
    Split after: 2 days (January 3, 2004 – January 5, 2004)

This spur-of-the-moment, late-night 2004 Vegas wedding between two childhood best friends is now known as “The Good Marriage.” BritBrit’s union with Kevin Federline later that same year got a little messy — to say the least.

  • 3 Jennifer Lopez and Cris Judd
    Getty Images
    Split after: about 9 months (September 29, 2001 – June 2002)

J Lo’s marriage to her choreographer was short-lived, but at least it didn’t give her some epic legal issues like her 11-month marriage to Cuban actor Ojani Noa.

  • 4 Kenny Chesney and Renee Zellweger
    Getty Images
    Split after: 4 months (May 9, 2005 – September 21, 2005)

After a brief courtship (and only slightly less brief marriage), Renee has gone on to say that the beach-side wedding to the country singer “was the biggest personal mistake of my life,” according to Daily Mail. Renee also put “fraud” as the reason for their split on official papers.

  • 5 Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley
    Getty Images
    Split after: 20 months (May 1994 – January 1996)

Despite the crazy amount of history (and money) between the two, the union between the King of Pop and the King of Rock’s daughter was not to be.

  • 6 Lyle Lovett and Julia Roberts
    Getty Images
    Split after: about 21 months (June 25, 1993 – March 22, 1995)

Let’s not forget about Jules pulling a real-life Runaway Bride on Keifer Sutherland and calling things quits two days before their 1991 wedding. But what’s even more bizarre is this brief marriage that actually DID happen to the country singer.

  • 7 Katy Perry and Russell Brand
    Getty Images
    Split after: 14 months (October 23, 2010 – December 30, 2011)

We were rooting for this one from the start, but in the end, Katy’s late nights on the town proved her to be incompatible with the ex-addict comedian.

  • 8 R. Kelly and Aaliyah
    Getty Images
    Split after: about 6 months (August 31, 1994 – February 1995)

Aaliyah’s “Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number” takes on a whole new level of freaky when you learn that R. Kelly wrote those words just before (allegedly) marrying her when she was just 15. Aaliyah’s parents had the illegal underage marriage annulled after.

  • 9 Janet Jackson and James DeBarge
    Getty Images
    Split after: 4 months (September 1984 – January 1985)

The little Jackson sister was only 18 years old when she eloped with her childhood friend and R&B singer, DeBarge. They stayed civil after the annulment, but rumors of a secret child between the two persist to this day.

  • 10 The-Dream and Christina Milian
    Getty Images
    Split after: 3 months (September 4, 2009 – December 2009)

Christina Milian and The-Dream wed in September ’09, but the marriage turned out to be a “fluke” after all. They have a beautiful daughter together named Violet.

  • 11 Johnathon Schaech and Jana Kramer
    Getty Images
    Split after: 1 month (July 4, 2010 – August 2010)

Neither one of these people are technically musicians, BUT Johnathon is known to fans around the world as James Mattingly II, lead singer and songwriter of The Wonders, made famous in 1996’s That Thing You Do. And his marriage to the One Tree Hill starlet was insanely short, so it all fits.

  • 12 Axl Rose and Erin Everly
    Getty Images
    Split after: 26 days (April 28, 1990 – May 1990)

Axl apparently wrote the epic “Sweet Child ’O’ Mine” for Everly, but according to her, Axl’s proposal needed work. The day before their wedding, he showed up at her house with a shot gun and threatened to kill himself if she didn’t agree to marry him. Rose filed for divorce less than a month later.

  • 13 Sinead O’Connor and Barry Herridge
    Getty Images
    Split after: 25 days (December 8, 2011 – January 2, 2012)

Sinead met Barry the old fashioned way: soliciting sex on the Internet. The Vegas marriage on her 46th birthday lasted only three weeks (with seven days of cohabitation) before the Bald One announced that they were dunzo.

  • 14 Cher and Gregg Allman
    Getty Images
    Split after: 9 days (June 30, 1975 – July 8, 1975)

Cher married the Allman Brother just days after the ink was dry on her divorce papers from long-time husband Sonny Bono. Gregg’s liquor and heroin problems got in the way, and Cher filed for divorce from him just days later. They ended up reconciling, stayed together for four years, and had son Elijah Blue. They spilt for good in 1979.

  • 15 Michelle Phillips and Dennis Hopper
    Getty Images
    Split after: 8 days (October 31, 1970 – November 7, 1970)

Having an anniversary on Halloween probably isn’t going to bode well for your romantic future. The brief union between the renegade actor and one of the Mamas from The Mamas & the Papas seems suitably spooky.
