Celebrity Couples Who Have (or Had) Open Relationships

Swing, swing!

I didn’t know what an open relationship was until summer 2014. I met a guy for coffee and he dropped a major bombshell: He had a boyfriend. However, they were allowed to “play” with others. I remember thinking, “What? Is this normal?!” How can someone be OK with his or her significant other fooling around? This has to be some kind of anomaly.

Except it isn’t. Many couples thrive in this unrestricted atmosphere. They operate under the guise that, yes, you get your main emotional satisfaction from your partner, but you get other things from other people. Humans weren’t meant to be monogamous, after all, so perhaps this is the more natural route?

These eight celebrity couples seem to think that. Some haven’t gone on the record and formally said, “Yes, we’re in an open relationship,” but they’ve all made comments that certainly implied it. Take a gander, and give us your thoughts on open relationships in the comments.

Hollywood’s golden couple keeps things open in their household. In 2011, Angelina told a German magazine, “I doubt that fidelity is absolutely essential for a relationship…It’s worse to leave your partner and talk badly about him afterwards. Neither Brad nor I have ever claimed that living together means to be chained together. We make sure that we never restrict each other.”

  • 2 Hugh Hefner and the Playboy Bunnies

The Playboy founder is notorious for his relationship with multiple “Bunnies” in his mansion. This dude practically wrote the book on open relationships.

The country icon and her husband have been married since 1966. The secret? A “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy when it comes to lovvvvers—well, according to PopDust. “If we cheat we don’t know it, so if we do cheat, it’s very good for both us. I don’t want to know it, if he’s cheating on me,” she said, the website reports. “If I’m cheating on him, he wouldn’t want to know it. And if we do, if that’s what’s making it work, then that’s fine too.”

  • 4 Mo’Nique and Sidney Hicks

The Academy Award-winning actress spoke very openly about her open marriage in an interview with Barbara Walters. “Do we have sex outside of the marriage? Let me say this. I have not had sex outside of my marriage with Sidney,” she said. “Could I have sex outside of my marriage with Sidney? Yes.”

  • 5 Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher

While unconfirmed, Wonderwall reports that while they were married, Demi and Ashton enjoyed a wild sex life that involved threesomes. One of Ashton’s lady friends actually admitted the couple had an open union.

  • 6 Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith

In April 2013, Jada took to Facebook and said Will and she don’t have an open marriage, but a “grown” one. What’s the difference, you ask? Not much, based on her words: “Will and I BOTH can do WHATEVER we want, because we TRUST each other to do so.”

  • 7 T-Pain and Amber Najm

According to TMZ, T-Pain and his wife have an open relationship, but here’s the catch: T can bring girls home, but Amber has to be there…either watching or participating. Hmmm, interesting!

  • 8 Tilda Swinton and John Byrne

Tilda and ex-husband John had an open marriage during their union. Both loved each other and raised their children together, but had various sidepieces. “It may seem odd but it is certainly the best thing for the children,” Tilda said. “It’s not something I try to promote as a radical lifestyle choice.”
