Celebrity Pregnancy Stories That Will Give You Nightmares

Kate Middleton, Gwyneth Paltrow, Salma Hayek and more.

If you’re pregnant, considering getting pregnant or just a regular ol’ hypochondriac, this is your jam.

Some celebrities—Kim Kardashian and Melissa Joan Hart, for example—are open about how much they hate being pregnant. Melissa Joan Hart doesn’t like it because it makes her feel like crap. Kim Kardashian doesn’t like it because it puts her health at risk (she suffered from preeclampsia and placenta accreta while pregnant with baby North).

Others still have undergone horrific experiences that left them and their post-pregnant selves (and me) scarred for life. From Kate Middleton suffering from hyperemesis gravidarum to Gwyneth Paltrow “almost dying,” here are celebrities who had awful pregnancies.

You have to hand it to Kim Kardashian for keeping it real. She wrote on her website that “pregnancy is the worst experience” of her life, and can you blame her? She suffered from preeclampsia and placenta accreta, a complication that occurs when the placenta attaches to the muscular layer of the uterine wall. Her surgery to remove the excess placenta post-pregnancy was documented on Keeping Up with the Kardashians.

Actress Mira Sorvino’s third pregnancy was nightmarish. She was hospitalized and put on bed rest for placenta previa, a complication resulting from the placenta being lower than usual in the cervix. Being on bed rest caused Mira to develop a blood clot, and she had to be anti-coagulated for months as a result. While in labor, she underwent a “substantial loss of blood” due to problems with the placenta, according to People.

Salma Hayek’s pregnancy was a difficult one, and not just because her husband fathered a baby with Linda Evangelista around the same time. Yes, that actually happened. Salma suffered from gestational diabetes and was told that her baby would have Down syndrome. She beat all of the odds when her daughter Valentina was born syndrome-free in 2007.

  • 4 Mariah Carey

Christmas queen Mariah Carey opened up about her pregnancy on HSN (of all places) while promoting her jewelry line in 2011. She didn’t give specifics about what made the pregnancy so awful, but she did say this: “My body went through so much. You have to keep those twins in as long as possible, but it’s a sacrifice you make for them. I was literally 47 weeks pregnant.”

  • 5 Celine Dion

Celine Dion, who gave birth to twins back in 2010, revealed that she was originally pregnant with triplets. Celine explained the loss of the third baby boy like this to a French news station shortly after giving birth: “He chose to let go to give space to his brothers to grow.” So heartbreaking.

  • 6 Kate Middleton

Kate Middleton suffered from hyperemesis gravidarum during both of her pregnancies. HG is a rare pregnancy complication that causes severe nausea and vomiting, and as a result, extreme weight loss. It’s the reason that word of Kate’s first pregnancy broke early, as she was admitted to King Edward VII Hospital in London to be treated for it.

  • 7 Gwyneth Paltrow

Gwyneth Paltrow nearly died the third time she was pregnant, according to her 2013 interview with Daily Mail. She didn’t give specifics as to what happened, though she did allude to her miscarriage. “I had a really bad experience when I was pregnant with my third and it didn’t work out and I nearly died,” she said. Perhaps she meant she almost died of grief?

  • 8 Tori Spelling

While pregnant with her son Finn, Tori Spelling was diagnosed with placenta previa. The complication meant that she could have suffered a hemorrhage great enough to end her pregnancy and Tori spent 10 weeks in the hospital and four months on bed rest as a result. “I just remember thinking, I can’t leave three children behind,” Tori told US Weekly after her son was born healthy.

  • 9 Camila Alves

Camila Alves’ third pregnancy took a major toll on her body. She underwent a C-section, but during the procedure, the doctors found “all kinds of things in there,” she said during an interview with The View. Camila didn’t elaborate, but she did say that the recovery left her unable to pick up her kids or exercise for a long time.

  • 10 Kelly Clarkson

Kelly Clarkson doesn’t just get morning sickness while pregnant. She gets “all-day sickness.” The singer said in an interview with CBS that she has to have an IV because she gets so dehydrated. Sounds les miserables, to be honest.

  • 11 Kate Hudson

Kate Hudson lost hair over her second pregnancy—literally. She told Redbook magazine that she got acne and packed on the pounds while pregnant with son Bingham, but what’s most bizarre is that she experienced severe hair loss. “All my hair fell out after he was born,” she said. Yikes!
