Dream Casting: What If VH1 Did The Wiz Live! with the Cast of Love & Hip Hop?

"When I think of home, I think of a place where there's love (& hip hop) overflowing..."

As NBC airs their live reimagining of the musical classic The Wiz, we thought about all the ways VH1 could breathe life into the timeless show. From K.Michelle’s signature vocals to hilarious cameos, we think we could “Ease on Down the Road” with the casts of Love & Hip Hop to great acclaim. Watch out Queen Latifah, Mary J. Blige, and Ne-Yo we see some kids here gunning for your spot.

  • 1 K.Michelle as Dorothy

Obviously, K. has the vocals to pull off the iconic song “Home” but does she have the acting chops? Stephanie Mills and later Diana Ross made the role famous but judging from her raw performance in The Rebellious Soul Musical we think K. could make the role of Dorothy her own.

  • 2 Omarion as the Scarecrow
    Universal/Getty
Michael Jackson delivered a breakthrough performance as the Scarecrow in the original film version and we think the natural heir to his throne would be Omarion. O certainly has the voice and the dance moves to “ease on down the road.”

  • 3 Stevie J as the Tinman
    Universal/Getty
The Tinman needs be the perfect blend of suave and hilarious. Crooning “Slide Some Oil To Me,” Stevie Jordan would be the perfect smooth and funny man to embody the Tinman and help him find his inner heart.

  • 4 Scrappy as The Cowardly Lion
    Universal/Getty
We’re not sure how Scrappy would feel about being called Cowardly but we’d venture to say he’d put some “paws” on us.

  • 5 Momma Dee as Aunt Em
    Universal/Getty
Momma Dee deserves to sit on the throne as Dorothy’s mother figure and protect her from all the evil of Oz. Off with their heads!

  • 6 Karlie Redd as Addaperle
    Universal/Getty
In the film version Addaperle is known as Miss One, she’s one of the Good Witches, and she’s flat-out hilarious. She, with help from the Munchkins, greets Dorothy when the tornado brings her to Oz. Karlie has the grace and good looks to be a Good Witch with a singing voice that is serviceable enough to knock her big number, “He’s the Wizard”, out of the park Oz.

  • 7 Joseline Hernandez as Glinda
    Universal/Getty
At the end of the original film, Hollywood legend Lena Horne comes out to escort Diana Ross back home. In our VH1 world, no other star shines as bright as The Puerto Rican Princess who could certainly assure Dorothy that there’s no place like the ATL home.

  • 8 Mama Jones as Evillene
    Universal/VH1
We think Mama Jones is a hoot and we think, at times, Chrissy Lampkin probably thought she was wicked, making her the most appropriate choice to rock out as Evillene the Wicked Witch. Move over, Mary J, Nancy Jones is coming for your spot. I mean you’ve heard her track “Psychotic,” right? Case in point.

  • 9 Snoop as The Wiz
    Universal/Getty
Ever notice on Love & Hip Hop when the going gets tough, everyone calls Uncle Snoop? Whether it’s Ray J or Stevie J, these guys always rely on Uncle Snoop to shed some wisdom on their personal troubles. We’d love to see Snoop in the final act of The Wiz, making an appearance in a cloud of smoke. Ya know?

  • 10 Marge Tiffany as Toto
    Universal/VH1
No doubt, Chrissy Monroe’s pup Marge Tiffany can hold it down as To to the To.
