Bill Gates Isn’t Totally in “Formation” With Beyonce’s Shout-Out

"I guess it’s nice that people consider me successful."

Bill Gates has yet to meet Beyonce in person, but he is aware of her famous lyrical shout-out to him in her anthemic single “Formation.”

Gates recently interviewed with WIRED, who, of course, asked him how he feels about Bey’s shout-out to him on the song. Gates’ response? Well, he’s not thrilled about it. But he doesn’t hate it either.

Gates, who didn’t actually know if Beyonce had said the black Bill Gates bit at this year’s Super Bowl, said the following about the shout-out: “I hadn’t realized that she did that until somebody in the office actually sent me a copy of the lyrics and I said, ’Are you serious? This is kind of a strange set of words here.'” He added, “I guess it’s nice that people consider me successful,” and clarified that he hasn’t actually met Beyonce, although he is acquainted with Jay Z.

“When I did some humor right when I was retiring from Microsoft—[Jay Z] was nice about participating in that and he did a great job on that,” Gates said. He added that he just might “do a Bing search” on his name to see who else is shouting him out in the zeitgeist. Because Bill Gates might be the only person left who actually uses Bing.

So basically, Gates, whose net worth is 176 times that of Beyonce’s, is somewhat confused about the lyrics, but he is happy that people think highly of him and his achievements. Perhaps he and the Carters should schedule a Red Lobster outing sometime in the near future.

Or maybe Gates should make a special appearance on Beyonce’s forthcoming world tour. Either or, really.
