Celebrities Who Live Famously Frugal Lives

Saving for retirement instead of making it rain.

Cristal, Maybach, diamonds on your timepiece: Making it big in Hollywood usually means becoming a big spender, in accordance with your fab new wealth. But while that kind of luxe most definitely is for us (tiger on a gold leash = ultimate bucket list item), some celebs just aren’t into conspicuous consumption.

None of the A-listers and Oscar-winners on this list have to scrimp and save to make ends meet, but that hasn’t stopped them from keeping it thrifty. Forget the champagne and caviar, designer clothes, fancy cars, and multi-million dollar lofts; you’re more likely to find these stars rubbing shoulders with the rest of us at Target. Whether they’re clipping coupons, shopping the sale rack, or practicing the money-saving skills they picked up during their not-so-financially-fortunate youths, these celebs are known for preferring low-cost lifestyles to the lap of luxury. Read on to find out which of your fave stars are seriously into saving money.

  • 1 Sarah Jessica Parker

SJP has a $90 million bank ballance, but growing up as one of eight children in a family on welfare made her extremely cash conscious. “My friends know me so well, and they know how terrified I am of being broke, and they think it is hilarious and humorous,’ she told the NYT in 2000. She famously brought home the outfits that she wore on the set of SATC, and even gets hand-me-down clothes for her kids.

  • 2 Jay Leno
After all those years as the king of latenight, Leno must be living large, right? Nope! According to Jay, he’s never spent a dime of his earnings from The Tonight Show; all of that money is socked away for a rainy day, while the TV host lives off his stand-up gigs.

  • 3 Mariska Hargitay
She’s made BANK on Law & Order: SVU, but Hargitay’s financially insecure upbringing, as well as her awareness of our culture’s gender double standards, has made her very money conscious. “I make a lot now, but I don’t feel that way, because I was poor and had no money for a lot longer than I’ve had it,” she told More magazine. “I’m saving money to live on, for the future. There are not that many roles for women, and I’ve been blessed with one of the great ones.”

  • 4 Ke$ha
Forget frugality; Ke$ha takes the money-saving biz to a whole new level when it comes to rocking her style. Back in 2009, when the newly-famous pop star pulled up to a party in her gold TransAm, she was more likely than not to be wearing something fabulous that she pulled out of a dumpster in back-alley LA.

  • 5 Shia LaBeouf
Shia is a celeb who understands the power of money; he grew up poor, and got into acting to help support his impoverished family. But now that he’s no longer struggling financially, the Transformers actor eschews the trappings of wealth and is an outspoken critic of greed culture — and when he’s left to his own devices, you’re more likely to spot him in a pair of worn-out holey pants than a designer suit.

  • 6 Zooey Deschanel
When Zooey split with husband Ben Gibbard back in 2012, one of the biggest shockers (apart from the fact that the cutie-pie couple couldn’t make it work) was the revelation that the actress and singer is an expert at low-cost living. Her total monthly expenses, per divorce documents obtained by TMZ: a mere $22,550.

  • 7 Tyra Banks
Most stars get paid — and pay handsomely — to look amazing. But the gorgeous outfits Tyra sported on her daytime TV show? All budget-friendly enough for her viewers to copy them, if they wanted to. And according to an interview with The New York Times, Tyra has always looked for ways to save, starting when she was just a kid setting aside part of her allowance for emergencies. “I’m frugal,” she said. “I’ve always been this way.”

  • 8 Miley Cyrus
“People in this industry think, ’I just gotta keep getting more money.’ And I’m like, ’What are you getting more money for? You probably couldn’t even spend it all in this lifetime,'” Miley told Marie Claire last year. That’s especially true for the pop star, whose tastes are as far from expensive as it gets. Her idea of a great shopping spree? A no-holds-barred
  • 9 Kristen Bell
Need another reason to love Kristen? Not only did her Hollywood dream wedding to Dax Shepard cost a mere $142 (courthouse for the win!), but the star is a self-admitted coupon junkie, just like us.

  • 10 Sarah Michelle Gellar
Like fellow ’90s It Girl Kristen Bell, Gellar is big on coupons. And while she does shop at the chi-chi Whole Foods, the actress prefers to buy her fancy fish on sale. “Why should you pay more for something that someone else is paying less for?”

  • 11 Vincent Kartheiser
After six years as one of the most recognizable supporting stars on Mad Men, Vincent’s next step could easily have been to acquire a big house and a fancy car. Instead, the fantastically frugal actor opted for no car and a 560 square foot tiny house that’s smaller than most celebrities’ bathrooms.

  • 12 Ashley Greene
The Twilight star made plenty of bank from her stint as a sparkly vampire, but that doesn’t mean she’s forgotten how to be thrifty. Said Greene, “I’m lucky because my dad taught me to be frugal and save. And that’s important because I want to know that I don’t have to take an acting job for two or three years if I don’t want to and that I’ll still be able to make my house and car payments and buy food for my dogs.”
