Black Girl Magic Slayed and Walked Away with the Tony Awards Red Carpet

From Lupita to Oprah, black girls owned the 70th Annual Tony Awards.

This year the 70th Annual Tony Awards honored the likes of Hamilton, The Color Purple, Eclipsed, and Shuffle Along, all featuring standout performances by the likes of Lupita Nyong’o, Jennifer Hudson, and Audra McDonald. A rich theatre season celebrating complex, three-dimensional characters of color stands out in contrast to the stark, white film season that resulted in zero Academy Award nominations for any actors of color.

Tony-winner Viola Davis told Essence magazine in 2013 that “the one thing I feel is lacking in Hollywood today is an understanding of the beauty, the power, the sexuality, the uniqueness, the humor of being a regular Black woman.” Where Hollywood has dropped the ball, the 2016 Broadway season has captured the essence, the radiance, and the versatility of being a Black woman. From presenters like, Uzo Aduba and Oprah Winfrey to the nominees, like Danielle Brooks, the women of the Tony Awards sprinkled their own individual Black Girl Magic all over the red carpet to remind you that Black girls slay, and will continue to do so for years to come.
