Jesse Williams Just Gave the Most Woke Speech at the 2016 BET Awards

"Just because we're magic doesn't mean we're not real."

Grey’s Anatomy bae Jesse Williams won the Humanitarian Award at the 2016 BET Awards, and his acceptance speech has the Internet uncontrollably screaming “YAAAS” in unison. Why? It was woke AF.

Instead of giving a bland speech, Williams took the opportunity to speak poignantly, directly and fervently about the issues Black people face in the United States right now: gun violence, police brutality, erasure, cultural appropriation and so much more.

Williams pointed out several hypocrisies in his speech, particularly Black teenagers being labeled as aggressive but not police officers, who brutalize people of color all the time.

But perhaps the most impactful part of Williams’ speech was his discussion of white appropriation. Williams scoffed at Caucasians who push Black issues to the fringes but have no problem “ghetto-izing” their artistic creations or trying Black culture on like a costume. Damn straight.

“Just because we’re magic doesn’t mean we’re not real,” Williams said. Do you have chills yet?

Twitter certainly does. Check out just a few of many spirited reactions to Williams’ speech.
