Somewhere, Prince is smiling ear to ear about Janelle Monae’s tribute to him at the 2016 BET Awards Sunday (June 26).
Monae’s tribute was one of several that occurred throughout the evening at the BET Awards. She channeled Eccentric Prince, donning white pants that showed off her literal butt cheeks–which, if you’re living under a rock, Prince wore during his performance at the 1991 MTV Video Music Awards.
Monae breathlessly and feverishly sang several of Prince’s hits. She started with “Delirious” before moving into “Kiss,” “Pop Life” and then “I Would Die for You.” Everything was on point: Her vocals, precision dance moves and a funky aesthetic that was quintessentially Prince. Peak Prince.
But don’t take our word for it. Watch her jaw-dropping tribute in the video below.
