Jennifer Lopez is going to give Wagner Moura of Narcos a run for his money.
Lopez is reportedly slated to play Colombian drug lord Griselda Blanco in an upcoming TV movie for HBO. For those who aren’t up on the drug smuggling business’ leading ladies, Blanco rose to notoriety in the ’70s and ’80s for her Miami-based cocaine trade. She was nicknamed the “Cocaine Godmother” and is said to have moved up to 300 kilos of cocaine a month, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Blanco reportedly spent almost 20 years in prison in the U.S. for drug trafficking and murder, including the killing of a toddler in Miami. She was ultimately shot to death in Medellin, Colombia in 2012. Her life story was featured in Cocaine Cowboys.
Lopez will also executive produce the TV movie, the title of which has yet to be determined. It will focus on Blanco’s rise and fall.
“I’ve been fascinated by the life of this corrupt and complicated woman for many years,” Lopez said of the movie, according to THR. “The idea of teaming with HBO felt like the perfect fit for finally bringing Griselda’s story to life.”
Lopez also stars in and executive produces NBC’s Shades of Blue. If the success of drug-based shows like Breaking Bad and Narcos is any indication, Lopez’s forthcoming HBO movie is likely to secure a large viewership.
