Random Celebrity Guest Star Moments of the ‘90s

George Clooney on Friends?

The ’90s were sort of weird. Everyone’s clothes were too big for them, and there was a lot of sincerity going around. It was also a time when some of today’s biggest stars weren’t such big stars yet, and randomly appeared on some of your favorite TV shows. Whether it was a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo or the dominating story arc of an entire episode, everyone from a young Ryan Reynolds to Yoko Ono made a guest appearance on shows as disparate as The X-Files and Mad About You.

If you want to find out which basketball star showed up to face-off against Uncle Jesse on Full House, or which iconic musical powerhouse appeared on Smart Guy, you’ll need to click through our gallery. Take a trip down memory lane with ’90s cameos from Coolio, Britney Spears, and even Nancy Kerrigan. There are some you might remember, and some that may even surprise you.

  • 1 Britney Spears on Sabrina, The Teenage Witch
Back when Britney Spears was America’s number one sweetheart, she appeared as herself alongside Melissa Joan Hart in the popular TGIF series. Further proof of their love-fest: Melissa Joan Hart appeared in Brit’s video for “(You Drive Me) Crazy.” [Photo: ABC]

  • 2 Keith Hernandez on Seinfeld
In one of the best episodes of Seinfeld, New York Mets stud Keith Hernandez appears (as himself) at the epicenter of a crazy spitting debacle. If you haven’t seen it or don’t remember, do yourself a giant favor and revisit it pronto. [Photo: Columbia Pictures Television]

  • 3 Bob Dylan on Dharma and Greg
In one of the weirdest, most random TV cameos of all-time, famous recluse Bob Dylan appeared as himself when Dharma (Jenna Elfman) decides to join a band. [Photo: ABC]

  • 4 Nancy Kerrigan on Boy Meets World
In a dream sequence, Nancy Kerrigan skated around on Boy Meets World as herself to teach Eric (Will Friedle) some ice skating skills and dole out girl advice. [Photo: ABC]

  • 5 Zooey Deschanel on Fraiser
You might have missed this one: A blonde, bangs-less Zooey Deschanel guest starred on Fraiser as Roz (Peri Gilpin)’s out-of-control cousin, and was barely recognizable. [Photo: NBC]

  • 6 George Clooney and Noah Wyle on Friends
One of our favorite Friends guest star moments was when E.R. stars George Clooney and Noah Wyle played doctors who dated Monica (Courteney Cox) and Rachel (Jennifer Aniston). [Photo: NBC]

  • 7 Yoko Ono on Mad About You
Proving no feat is too weird for Yoko Ono, she appeared in a 1995 episode of Mad About You when Paul (Paul Reiser) and Jamie (Helen Hunt) went to her apartment to try and convince her to work on a film project. [Photo: NBC]

  • 8 The Beach Boys on Home Improvement
The Beach Boys serenaded us on a snowy Home Improvement episode, joining the Taylor’s neighbor Wilson over the fence as his cousins — it makes weird sense when you think about the band’s Wilson moniker! [Photo: ABC]

  • 9 Don Cheadle on The Fresh Prince of Bel Air
Before he was a “serious” actor, he was a gerry-curled guest star talking about girls name Hilary (Karyn Parsons) with Will Smith on The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. [Photo: NBC]

  • 10 Justin Theroux on Sex and the City
Before he was Mr. Jennifer Aniston, Justin Theroux starred on Sex and the City twice (first in the pilot, and then later in season one) as two different characters. The second time around he had a substantial role in which Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) found a soul mate in his mother and some… premature issues in his bedroom performance. [Photo: HBO]

  • 11 Destiny’s Child on Smart Guy
The Queen cameoed with Destiny’s Child on Smart Guy in 1998, when young T.J. (Tahj Mowry) got an offer to join the girls on tour as a backup dancer. [Photo: The WB]

  • 12 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar on Full House
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is apt to turn up in the strangest places, always as himself. And on Full House, he was there to make Uncle Jesse (John Stamos) look very, very small. [Photo: ABC]

  • 13 Hulk Hogan on Baywatch
As weird as it is to see Hulk Hogan in a speedo, it somehow makes perfect sense. He played himself in the 1996 episode, along with fellow pro-wrestler Randy Savage, in a not-so original plot line in which WWE super villain Ric Flair was trying to destroy the world at large. [Photo: NBC]

  • 14 Denise Richards on Saved by the Bell
Looking fresh faced and glowing, a young Denise Richards popped by Saved by the Bell to try and woo Slater (Mario Lopez)’s heart right out of his bare chest. [Photo: NBC]

  • 15 Ryan Reynolds on The X-Files
Poor Ryan Reynolds played the sacrificial lamb during his 1996 episode of The X-Files. Along with barely being featured in the episode at all, he was sadly ritualistically murdered by two girls. Just another day in the world of The X-Files. [Photo: FOX]

  • 16 Ryan Seacrest on Beverly Hills, 90210
It might seem weird for a pre-American Idol Ryan Seacrest to have been on Beverly Hills, 90210, but what’s even stranger are the frosted tips he was sporting. On the show he ominously played a talk show host. We’re just happy his hair is normal now. [Photo: FOX]

  • 17 Julia Roberts on Law & Order
Superstar Julia Roberts turned up on Law & Order in 1999, which can only be explained by the fact that she was dating star Benjamin Bratt at the time. [Photo: NBC]

  • 18 Coolio on The Nanny
Nothing on earth makes us happier than the absolute absurdity of seeing rapper Coolio partying with Fran Fine (Fran Drescher) and Niles (Daniel Davis). You better believe Fran accidentally confused a gift “wrapper” with a “rapper.” [Photo: CBS]

  • 19 Ewan McGregor on ER
We’re not happy to report that Ewan McGregor played a bad guy during his time on the long-running hospital drama. Despite performing an armed robbery, we’ll always remember him for his swoon-worthy Elephant Love Medley in Moulin Rogue. [Photo: NBC]

  • 20 Woody Allen on Just Shoot Me
Woody Allen’s Just Shoot Me cameo was a voice role only. The episode was about him, and while he didn’t play himself, he lent his voice to the actor, Ed Crasnick, who did. Bizarre. [Photo: NBC]
