The List of Celebs Joining the #MuteRKelly Movement is Growing

Enough is enough.

The unraveling of R. Kelly’s multi-decade R&B reign is steadily in motion. The “Step in the Name of Love” singer has been accused of multiple sex crimes over the past 20 years including, statutory rape, child pornography and imprisonment. Despite the numerous women that have come forward with claims of being abused by the singer, Kelly has never truly suffered the consequences. That all might change very soon.

Several weeks ago, Kelly’s lawyer, publicist and assistant all quit working for him on the heels of a disturbing documentary about his sexual past released by BBC. Days later, famous radio personality Tom Joyner vowed to quit playing his music at the encouragement of #MeToo founder Tarana Burke. Then, there was a heartfelt open letter released by The Women of Color within the Time’s Up movement that really lit the match. “R&B singer R. Kelly has preyed on teenage girls for the past 25 years,” the letter begins. “It’s time our society stops his cycle of abuse…We must not let habitual abusers float above justice simply because they are rich and famous. Let’s work together to turn R. Kelly into a symbol for victim’s rights, reminding abusers everywhere that no one is untouchable.”

On the heels of the BBC documentary, several of R. Kelly’s shows have been cancelled, including a homecoming concert in Chicago. But for many celebrities, this isn’t enough. “Y’all. This has been a long, hard, fought journey that SO MANY sisters have been on for more than a decade. This man is a predator and 100% of his victims have been Black and Brown girls. At times it felt like screaming into a well, but thank God for this reckoning coming.”
