Neil Patrick Harris Opens Oscars with Anna Kendrick and a Race Joke

Simply put, Neil Patrick Harris just makes everything better. Case in point: the host kicked off the 87th Academy Awards with a performance no viewer would soon forget.

The big screen actor/Broadway icon/superstar dad charmed Hollywood’s elite by singing a monologue to honor the “best and whitest,” er, “best and brightest.” The triple threat was joined by Anna Kendrick, dressed and singing along as her Into the Woods’ character Cinderella, and Jack Black letting it rip with a spiel on superhero movies. (Black was quickly forced off stage by Kendrick, who chucked her golden slipper at the comedian.)

The trio sang in front of a screen that flashed scenes from movies of days past, including Sharon Stone’s infamous Basic Instinct legs-uncrossed bit, which was luckily covered by a strategically¬†positioned Harris.

Some of Harris’ choice lyrics included: “No one’s drunk and bitter yet because no one has lost,” “I secretly hope someone pulls a Kanye West,” and “We are here tonight with our Xanax and Dior.” To which we all say, touch√©.

NPH and Anna Kendrick just put in work. Check out the full performance.
