News Flash: Charity Concert Featuring The Artist Postponed

The Muhammad Ali World Healing Concert, a charity concert originally scheduled to take place this Friday at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles with featured performances by The Artist, Lenny Kravitz, LL Cool J, Tony Rich,

Sheryl Crow and Celine Dion, was postponed late last week when a television network that had previously declined to broadcast the concert had a change of heart, according to a World Healing Concert spokesperson.

A new date for the concert has yet to be determined, but The Muhammad Ali World Healing Project is "hoping to have it rescheduled sometime early next year," according to its publicist Kymberlee Norsworthy. Without a definite rescheduled date, however, it is unclear if the foundation, which is dedicated to ending bigotry, will be able to maintain the same all-star lineup.

Norsworthy said that the event to raise money for the worldwide campaign against prejudice was postponed to give concert organizers and the network more time to work out logistics. Norsworthy declined to name the television network, adding that the negotiations are ongoing.

In addition to the recent setback, the concert had organizational problems early on when a press conference being canceled at the last minute due to a schedule conflict with former heavyweight boxing champ Muhammad Ali and rocky broadcast negotiations with a number of television networks. "We were set to go ahead without television," Norsworthy said. "But a network that had turned us down earlier came back at the 11th hour and wanted to make a deal. We decided to postpone the concert so we could do a better job of getting out the foundation's message."

The Muhammad Ali World Healing Project is the charitable foundation created by the former boxing champ as a part of his international campaign against bigotry and prejudice. The foundation released a book last year entitled Healing but is considering this concert its official opening event. -- Randy Reiss [Tues., Oct. 7, 1997, 4:30 p.m. PDT]
