For some bands, it's a bummer that Halloween comes but once a year. Mudvayne, Marilyn Manson and Insane Clown Posse wear makeup and silly costumes every night, but most acts only get to play dress-up on stage on October 31. For Maroon 5
Whether they don skirts or not, in the tradition of Phish's blow-out All Hallow's Eve gigs — during which the band has covered entire albums by other acts — jam bands will be playing dress-up all over the country on Friday. Widespread Panic and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band hit Madison Square Garden in New York, while moe. rock the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago, Commander Cody and Karl Denson's Tiny Universe do their thing across town at the House of Blues and the Steve Kimock Band play down the road at the Vic Theatre. Newly jam-friendly Primus reunite for a hometown show in San Francisco, the Del McCoury Band will share a stage with Leftover Salmon at the Fillmore in Denver, original jammer Bob Weir and Ratdog touch down in Cleveland at the Agora and the String Cheese Incident play the Cox Pavilion in Las Vegas. No Halloween would be complete without a signature gig from shockabilly giants the Cramps, who move their traditional spookfest south from San Francisco to Los Angeles, where they will perform alongside Queens of the Stone Age and Tomahawk at the Greek Theatre. Further down in San Diego, Deftones will take the stage with Denali and Poison the Well at SOMA. Rappers are getting in the action as well, with ICP-affiliated Twiztid playing the Ogden Theatre in Denver, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, ICP, Kottonmouth Kings and Tech N9ne playing Detroit's State Theatre and Cypress Hill invading the Roseland Ballroom in New York. While every day is Halloween for Marilyn Manson, he'll take the stage in Dallas at the Smirnoff Music Centre along with Sevendust, Staind and Lo-Pro on the one night when he might get some competition from his tourmates. "We've never played a show on Halloween, but I would think playing one with Manson has to be the best," said Lo-Pro singer Peter Murray, who remembered his favorite costume as a kid was a pumpkin his mother made that he would fill with "so much damn candy." Murray's idea for a costume might not sit well with one of the other acts on the bill, though. "I'm thinking of dressing up like Aaron Lewis," he said of the Staind singer, who signed the band to his 413 Records imprint. "I have to paint on the tattoos and figure out a way to look heavier without pissing off the boss." Whether he pulls it off or not, Cleveland will be an awfully scary place to be as costume rockers Mushroomhead play the Phantasy Theatre, Days of the New continue their comeback at the Rhythm Room and fright-wigged country singer Lyle Lovett inhabits the State Theatre for the night. If your idea of a costume is closer to a Mohawk and some leather wristbands, there will be plenty of punk rock shows to hit after coming down from that sugar high. Moneen, Saves the Day and Taking Back Sunday mope into the Gypsy Tea Room in Dallas; the Hentchmen and Shonen Knife play the Magic Stick in Detroit; Brand New, Eisley and Hot Rod Circuit are at the Trocadero in Philadelphia; while Motion City Soundtrack, Rufio and Singapore Sling pop into Graceland in Seattle. If you are looking to chill, you can always go see Bright Eyes at the Housing Works Bookstore in New York, or, conversely, get your black metal on with Amon Amarth, Goatwhore, Kreator, Nile and Vader at The Masquerade in Atlanta. Some other shows you might want to check out: Electric Six and Junior Senior at the North Star in Philadelphia; R. Kelly at the Wachovia Center in Philly; Celine Dion doing her nightly thing at the Colosseum in Vegas; Powerman 5000 and Sloth at the Crystal Ballroom in Portland; Skid Row at the Hard Rock in New York; or Boy George DJing at Zentra in Chicago, where the town will be jumping with additional shows by the North Mississippi Allstars (Congress Theatre), Quasi (Empty Bottle) and the Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players (Old Town School of Folk Music).
