bum rush as seen at the 1998 ceremony. Rather, the White Stripes are the first performers announced for the 46th annual Grammy Awards, set for February 8 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

The stripped-down pair's latest album, Elephant, will be facing off against Missy Elliott's Under Construction, Evanescence's Fallen, Outkast's Speakerboxxx/ The Love Below and Justin Timberlake's Justified for the prestigious Album of the Year honors. The band's fourth LP is also up for Best Alternative Music Album, competing against the latest releases by Radiohead, Sigur Rós, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and the Flaming Lips, whose seven-song EP Fight Test features the twanged-up tune "Thank You Jack White (For the Fiber-Optic Jesus You Gave Me.)"

The White Stripes single "Seven Nation Army," meanwhile, is up for Best Rock Performance By a Duo or Group with Vocal and Best Rock Song.

This year's Grammy Awards promise a close race. Four artists are tied with a pack-leading six nominations, and nine have garnered five nods. Christina Aguilera and Erykah Badu also have four nominations (see "Jay-Z, Beyonce, Outkast, Pharrell Nab Most Grammy Nominations").
