Elton John has announced plans to marry his partner of 11 years, David Furnish, before Christmas — not long after same-sex civil partnerships become legal in England. John told England's Daily Mirror newspaper that he will skip
"We definitely want to do it about the middle of December," John, 58, told the paper. "Meeting David has been the greatest thing to happen to me." Gay civil partnerships become legal in the U.K. on December 5. Just last month, the British tabloids suggested the pair might be splitting due to John's busy schedule, which spurred Furnish to release a statement saying the pair had "never been happier." "He's the most honest guy I've ever met," John said. "If anything happened, I think David would say: 'Listen, I was tempted the other night,' and he's human. But that hasn't happened. ... Yes, we spend a lot of time apart and it's hard, but we make it work." John has credited 42-year-old Furnish with helping him to overcome his life-threatening drug and alcohol addictions. The flamboyant pop star was previously married to studio technician Renate Blauel; the pair wed on Valentine's Day in 1984 and divorced in 1988. In addition to his long-term Las Vegas engagement at Caesars Palace, John told the paper he is writing new songs with the Scissor Sisters and preparing the launch of two musicals, "Vampire Lestat" and a live version of the film "Billy Elliot." "Elliot" is slated to debut on May 12 at the Victoria Palace Theatre in London. This report is provided by MTV News
