Zeeland, Mich., school board vote tabled until May 18.

The Zeeland, Mich., Board of Education has tabled its vote on a controversial student-generated proposal to ban all music T-shirts from Zeeland High School.

The proposal came in the wake of the suspension in early March of 17-year-old Eric

VanHoven after he wore a T-shirt to school that bore the name of the alt-metal band Korn.

"A lot of people are just resigned to [the proposed ban]," VanHoven said, "but it sure did divide the school for a while."

The school board was scheduled to vote on the resolution at their meeting on Monday night, but, according to board spokesperson Jim Camenga, "they had meaty issues to discuss and decided to vote on the resolution at their meeting on [May] 18th."

Among the "meaty issues" discussed at the meeting, according to The Holland Sentinel, was a study that encouraged the district to create separate classes for gifted and talented elementary-school students.

The proposed resolution was written by a committee of Zeeland High School students and administrators after consulting with the school's population and an area attorney. If the resolution is passed, it would ban all attire that bears the names of musicians or music groups. As it now stands, the school's dress code bans "obscene, libelous, indecent or vulgar material or clothing or other items that imply obscenity, violence, drugs, alcohol or sexual innunendo."

VanHoven said that the community has been polarized since he was suspended in March and that the effects still linger. "A lot of people know who I am now," he said, "and some people still come up to me and say, 'Hi -- thanks,' and other people really hate me for bringing all this attention."

A threatened suit against the school by VanHoven over his suspension and the school's dress code has yet to be filed. While his lawyer, Karay Love, could not be reached Tuesday (May 5) for comment, Love previously told SonicNet Music News that he and his client would wait to see what action the school board takes before filing suit.
