Despite earlier reports from the House of Blues that listed them atop the summer's all-star rap bill, hip-hop legends Public Enemy will not be playing the organization's Smokin' Grooves tour this year, the band's publicist said Tuesday (May 5). The pioneering rap group previously had been reported as headlining a lineup for the summer tour festival that includes ganja-rappers Cypress Hill, Caribbean carnival hip-hoppers Wyclef Jean and the Refugee Allstars, clown prince Busta Rhymes, underground legends Gang Starr and up-and-comers Canibus, Cam'Ron and Charlie B. While Chuck D publicist Kym Norsworthy noted that PE had at one time talked to Smokin' Grooves festival organizers, she said Tuesday (May 5), "I talked to Chuck about it on Friday, and he basically said [Smokin' Grooves] was a dead issue. They just are not yet thinking about performing. They have some other projects that, if they do something else together, are more important than going out on the road." Although Norsworthy would not elaborate on those other projects, she did say that Bring The Noise 2000, the first release of the Public Enemy Archive Series, is slated to debut in August. House of Blues publicist Albert Agbayani said on Tuesday (May 5) that the organization had not yet officially announced anything about this year's tour and could not confirm or deny Public Enemy's participation on the Smokin' Grooves tour. On April 17, however, House of Blues publicist Sharon Liveten said that while the ink was still drying on contracts, Public Enemy would top the bill. Liveten is on vacation this week and could not be reached for comment. Asked in early April if Public Enemy would be performing at the upcoming Tibetan Freedom Concert, held to raise awareness about the oppressed Tibetan people, PE leader Chuck D told SonicNet Music News "Any performance this year is doubtful." Chuck D added that Public Enemy are composed of two bodies: the Bomb Squad recording team and a touring unit. "Touring has yet to be determined, whether we're going to do it or not. I'm a member of both teams. I don't know if I'll make a commitment to the touring operation, which includes [PE stage dancers] the S1Ws, [DJ] Terminator X, Flavor Flav, Professor Griff and everybody." This year's Smokin' Grooves festival marks the third time around for the all-day hip-hop marathon, which began in 1995. Cypress Hill have played all of the festivals and previous years have featured such funk, rap and R&B artists as Erykah Badu, George Clinton and the P-Funk All-Stars, the Roots, Spearhead, the Pharcyde and the Brand New Heavies.
