reports. An official at the Malawi welfare department told the AP that Madonna had filed adoption papers.

Another source close to the case said Madonna would be in Malawi this weekend and a court could hear her adoption case as soon as Monday. Meanwhile, a U.S. government official confirmed that Madonna's adoption bid was under way, but Madonna's rep, Liz Rosenberg, would not comment.

After adopting son David Banda from the country in 2006, many people wondered if rules were bent to grant her an adoption, and questions are once again being raised about this adoption because Malawi does not typically grant adoptions to single or divorced parents. But a Malawi welfare official said that "each case is considered on merit." Madonna is allegedly looking to adopt a baby girl from the country. The adopted child would join Madonna's sons Rocco and David and daughter Lourdes.

In an interview with Malawi's The Nation published last week, the singer said she was considering another adoption but would only do it if she had "the support of the Malawian people and government." Madonna first went to Malawi to do charity work and film a documentary on the poverty and AIDS crisis there. She later released the documentary "I Am Because We Are." She is also establishing a school for girls there. She said in an interview last year that she planned to visit Malawi this month with all of her children.
