In the lead-up to the 2009 Video Music Awards — airing live at 9 p.m. on Sunday from Radio City Music Hall —
"We have a giant, 88-foot wall on the inside of Radio City and that's going to be our window into a lot of New York environments," VMA executive producer Jesse Ignjatovic revealed. "That's going to completely tie in New York to the show. We've got shots of bridges, buildings — you name it, it's in those images." For VMA nominees, performers and presenters, the New York theme isn't just about the show's look, it's about the city's ever-present diversity and vibrancy. "There's so many people with ill style, a lot of intelligent individuals, a lot of visionaries in New York," Best New Artist nominee Drake told MTV News. Keeping with the "West Side Story" theme, the classic Broadway musical will also be a strong presence in the room and on the main show set. For the performances that will take place inside Radio City's walls — and not all of them will! — producers have been careful not to overwhelm the artists with the overall VMA theme. "For the performances, that is the artist's moment to do what they do with their song, so we don't want to impose our vision too much onto what those performances look like," Ignjatovic said. Beyoncé will take the stage to sing "Sweet Dreams," the latest single off her multiplatinum I Am ... Sasha Fierce album. Her hubby, Jay-Z, is set to bust out a song from his just-released The Blueprint 3. Swift is planning to sing an updated version of her new single, "You Belong With Me." Green Day will rock a song off 21st Century Breakdown, while Pink will take the stage to sing a track from her multiplatinum Funhouse. British rockers Muse will debut "Uprising," the first single off their album The Resistance. The red carpet — where "Twilight" star Ashley Greene joins MTV News' correspondents to interview celebs during the 8 p.m. preshow — will also draw on its urban surroundings. "It's gonna have a nice New York, summertime street feel with bulb lighting, rather than some big presence of bleachers, like a typical red carpet," Ignjatovic said. With just days to go until the main event, show producers can't wait to return to the VMAs' roots — and all the bustling possibilities New York offers. "The show began here, and we haven't been here since 2006, so we're really excited," Ignjatovic said. "It brings a whole new energy to the show." This report is provided by MTV News
