Barenaked Ladies' Stunt Debuts At #3

Quirky Canadian guitar-pop band breaks out of its cult following and storms the top 10.

The years of relentless touring and releasing albums to a devoted fanbase, especially in their native Canada, are beginning to pay off with big record sales for the quirky guitar-pop band known as the Barenaked Ladies.

According to SoundScan,

the group moved 141,000 copies of their new album, Stunt, in the week ending July 12, enough to secure a debut at #3 on this week's Billboard 200 albums chart.

Brad Stern, an assistant manager at Harmony House in Birmingham, Mich., said that while the group has had a large following in the Detroit area for some time now, he was still surprised at the number of people who rushed to his store to get the group's fifth full-length album on its first day of release. "Right off the bat we did very well," he explained. "I had to order extra copies for the weekend, which was a bit sooner than I thought I would have to do."

Retailers across the U.S. said the album did well, even in markets where the Ladies' cult following isn't reinforced by the constant play they receive on Canadian airwaves. At San Francisco's Virgin Megastore, Stunt was #16 on the store's top 30 list -- a fact that buyer Robin Morales attributed to the growing popularity of "One Week" (RealAudio excerpt), the album's first single. "The single is pretty catchy," Morales said. "It's one of those that people come in and don't know the exact name of, so they sing it. Or at least they try."

This week's other high-level debut belonged to gangsta rappers Kane & Abel -- the latest protégés of hip-hop mogul Master P. Their first album, Am I My Brother's Keeper, landed at #5 after moving 109,000 copies. Master P's own MP Da Last Don held on to the #7 slot on sales of 92,000. Topping the chart again for a second week was the soundtrack to "Armageddon," which moved 236,000 copies, an increase of 52,000 over the week before.

Guitar-pop band Matchbox 20's Yourself Or Someone Like You, which has been on the charts for 71 weeks, became the second-oldest release currently in the top 100. Coming in this week at #16, it is only four weeks younger than the Spice Girls' Spice, which inches up from #57 to #53 in its 75th week of release.

Meanwhile, several of last week's notable debuts fell down the charts.

The rapping trio of Eric Sermon, Keith Murray and Redman, known collectively as Def Squad, saw their El Niño drop from #2 to #12 on sales of 77,000, while soul sensation Maxwell saw his Embrya slip from #3 to #9 after moving 86,000 albums. Also moving southward were punk-rock torch-bearers Rancid, whose Life Won't Wait fell from #35 to #63 after selling 20,000, while The Artist Formerly Known As Prince's Newpowersoul tumbled 34 spots to #56 after selling 23,000 copies.

Other chart veterans had a better week. The start of the OzzFest last week translated into higher sales for some of that summer metalhead tour's acts, with sales for Limp Bizkit's hip-hop flavored metal album Three Dollar Bill Y'all creeping up from 8,100 to 9,000 -- sending the album from #164 to #139.

Other OzzFest acts experiencing sales jumps included Sevendust, whose self-titled debut sold 1,200 more copies this chart-week than last with 6,200 total, and art-metal band Tool, whose 1996 album Anemia leapt back up the charts to #153 after selling 6,200 copies.

The Smashing Pumpkins, whose album sold 47,000 copies this chart-week, dropped five spots to #23 and should pass the gold (500,000 copies sold) plateau next week.

Also among the week's highest climbers were pop-rockers Harvey Danger, whose Where Have All The Merrymakers Gone? jumped 44 spots to #105, and fantasy metalheads Monster Magnet, whose Powertrip vaulted from #172 to #141. Industrial metal act Rammstein also leapt forward, moving from #108 to #80 with their Sehnsucht.

The rest of the top 10: Various Artists, City of Angels soundtrack (#2); Brandy, Never S-A-Y Never (#4); Various Artists, Hope Floats soundtrack (#6); Will Smith, Big Willie Style (#8); and Various Artists, Dr. Doolittle: The Album (#10).
