Because nobody said they couldn't, the folks at Arizona's Epiphany Records have
declared Tuesday, October 1 "National Giant Sand Day." Sand, the underground
collective spearheaded by the mysteriously cracked Howe Gelb, recently released
a CD of
bootlegs on the label, and are now preparing to unveil the first-ever
Giant Sand documentary, "Drunken Bees," at nine screenings across the country.
The 27 minute movie, directed by French filmmaker Marriane Dissard, features
cameos from the Friends of Dean Martinez, Rainer and Victoria Williams, and
like the best Sand music, is both revelatory and a complete mess, all at once,
with "scenes" like Gelb asking a general at an Air Force base to read from "The
Little Prince," and an encounter with a drunken transient that features
mixed-up subtitles. The screenings will take place on Oct. 1st at 8 P.M. in the
following locations: Chicago, Dr. Wax Records; Seattle, Easy Street; Portland,
Roundhouse; San Francisco, Rocket Records; Minneapolis, Cheapo; New York,
Disc-o-Rama; San Diego, Taang West; Albuquerque, Bow Wow; Los Angeles, Rhino
Records. And on Oct. 9 there will be a screening at L'Oblique in Montreal.
