Deerhoof
L.A. Weekly dubbed this San Francisco four-piece "the most creative band in indie rock today," and nine out of ten music bloggers agree. A disorienting mix of pure noise, pure pop, and the Shibuya shopping district vocals of Satomi Matsuzaki, they've released eleven albums of increasing ambition. A concept CD about cartoon characters, 2004's Milk Man, was even turned into a ballet. En pointe!
Offend Maggie
Oh, those wacky conceptualists! After a recent performance in Brooklyn, the band gave out sheet music for Offend's "Fresh Born" to the audience so they could record their own "interpretations." Now that's democracy in action. Our dub-step version falls a little short of the 'hoof's charm. Proceeds from digital sales of the album go to organizations like FAIR and radical bible Z Magazine.
