Bing Crosby & the Andrews Sisters
A Merry Christmas
MCA
Perhaps we've been sipping on too much eggnog, but Bing Crosby's laid-back croon has always seemed frighteningly sexy. With his slurred vocals and insolent lethargy, the Cros was the Dave Matthews of his day, and even when singing "Poppa Santa Claus," his mind seems to be more on getting you to come back under the duvet - or maybe it's just getting back out on the fairway. It's still raunchy stuff for the post-war period when these collected seasonal offerings were recorded, and when he's teamed with the on-a-dime vocalizing of Minneapolis' own Andrews Sisters, it's too much. So either remember a time of innocence in Levittown while listening to Bing lacerate Christmas commercialism on "Is Christmas Only a Tree," or raise an eyebrow as the Sisters trill "I'd grab the whip and keep a watch for weather vanes" on their rollicking "I'd Like to Hitch a Ride With Santa Claus." As for Bing singing "You're All I Want for Christmas," let's hope Santa brings us a fresh pair of underwear.
