The Best Christmas Album in the World ... Ever
Virgin
Truth in Advertising Dep't: They got it right. Carols are ordered better in England, where the Christmas No. 1 is considered the jewel in any self-respecting pop star's crown. This imported collection starts off with the one-two punch of John Lennon's "Happy Christmas/War Is Over" and Paul McCartney's "Wonderful Christmastime," whose bleeping electronics could give Moby a run for his money. The rest is a two-CD treasure trove of stocking-oriented baubles from artists like Elton John and David Bowie, all the way to Nat "King" Cole singing "The Christmas Song." If you haven't yet been introduced to Wizzard's "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday" then get ready for the greatest record ever made, while the Waitresses' ace 1981 "Christmas Wrapping" managed to wish everyone but Margaret Thatcher season's greetings. Sure, the inn should have been too full to admit the Spice Girls' giggly take on "Sleigh Ride" and God-rocker Cliff Richard is represented by two songs too many, but extra credit for including Frankie Goes to Hollywood's swoon-some "The Power of Love."
