Deana Carter
Father Christmas
(Rounder, 2001)
We haven't heard much from the country lass who kicked mucho butt with 1996's
Did I Shave My Legs For This? After a short bout with ubiquity, Carter and her glorious voice sort of faded away. This holiday disc, made with guitarist and dad Fred
Carter reminds that Christmas is a time to be with the family. Vocals and
strings are the only instruments here, and the record's unique intimacy is its
calling card. There's an impetuousness in Carter's voice, and even on
something as usually formal as 'The Christmas Song,' the bounce in poppa's
guitar is equaled by the playfulness in the singer's lines. That's how it is
across the board. Ease is everywhere. Even 'White Christmas' and 'Silent Night' are aided by the
nonchalance Carter brings to them.
