Leon Redbone
Christmas Island
(Universal/Blue Thumb)
The recipe for holiday records is so formalized at this late date, it's great
to see oddballs chirpping out a carol or two. Back in 1989, when
Christmas Island was first released, this shtick-soaked advocate of old-timey
tunes put a grin on listener's faces by ambling through a skewed holiday songbook with his mumbled lyrics and
soft-shoe swing. Luckily the tunes he chooses lend themselves to the
lightheartedness of his approach. Redbone's almost as silly a cartoon character as Frosty the Snowman,
and his natural gift for surrealism turns the events of "Winter Wonderland"
into a subzero carnival. Even the theme from "Babes In Toyland" takes on a touching kind of psychedelic sentiment when this Hawaiian-shirted boho gives it a whirl.
