Olivia Newton-John
The Christmas Collection
(Universal, 2001)
An Olivia Newton-John Christmas album is much like everybody else's Christmas album, except with Olivia Newton-John. And since she's never knowingly raised her hand in anger against another and still possesses the undemanding warble which once graced "Have You Never Been Mellow," it seems churlish to suggest that perhaps the world doesn't really need to hear unimaginative treatments of "Ave Maria" or "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." To bulwark her wispy personality, Newton-John enlists guests Kenny Loggins, Clint Black, and Vince Gill who, aside from a "Let It Snow!" that's as jolly as taking a file to your teeth, almost make the program interesting. When played at a volume below the crackling of an open fire and children's giggles, the overall effect of The Christmas Collection is quite soothing.
